222【Dialogue with Masters】 Break free from parents’ control?

心理这点事儿

英文播客 This is another essential episode of our “EAT Masters Series.” In today’s episode, we are joined by expressive arts therapy expert Dr. Yousef AlAjarma. Drawing from over thirty years of clinical experience—ranging from academic halls to trauma recovery in conflict zones—he joins us to explore a struggle that resonates across cultures: How do I break free from emotional blackmail when my parents say, “It’s all for your own good”? When guilt becomes an invisible chain used to control our choices, we often feel trapped in shame. But Yousef reminds us that relationships aren't just about the words we speak—they are lived and stored within our senses and our bodies. In this episode, Yousef invites you to become “a fish swimming in the deep.” Through this gentle yet profound metaphor, he guides you beyond the maze of verbal conflict to discover: How have external messages shaped your “scales” on the outside? What does your “inner self” truly need from the waters around you? Join us as we use creativity to build a shield of love—learning how to navigate the complex currents of family and find the freedom to swim your own path. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ In today’s episode, I’m truly honored to be joined by Dr. Yousef AlAjarma, a professor in the Counseling Department at William James College, and a registered expressive arts therapist and licensed mental health counselor. He brings years of experience working at the intersection of expressive arts, trauma, and community mental health, with a particular focus on resilience, family systems, and conflict transformation. Throughout his career, he has worked extensively with trauma survivors in Palestine, collaborating with organizations such as the United Nations, Doctors of the World, and the Palestinian Ministry of Education. He’s former Executive Co-Chair of the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association, and continues to support individuals and communities through both clinical work and teaching. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 「Expressive Arts Therapy — Conversations with Masters」 As a graduate of the first cohort of the China–U.S. Expressive Arts Therapy training program, I feel deeply honored to invite six leading figures in the field—senior practitioners, professors, and educators actively engaged in both clinical work and teaching—to join this series and share their insights. They all graduated from Lesley University and bring decades of experience. They are not only experts, but also pioneers—people who have witnessed and shaped the field from its early beginnings to where it is today. To make listening easier, this series will be released in two versions: a Chinese voiceover version and the original English audio. You can choose whichever feels right for you. 🔗China–U.S.

This is the second episode of our “EAT Masters” series. In today’s episode, we’re joined by expressive arts therapy expert Dr. Philip Speiser, who brings over four decades of clinical and teaching experience to explore a deeply personal question: What can I do about my mom’s constant criticism? When external voices slowly become an inner critic, perhaps what needs to change is not only the relationship itself, but the relationship we have with that voice. Because relationships don’t only exist outside of us—they also live within our bodies. In this episode, Phillip will guide you through the arts, inviting you to experience how to find your own center—somewhere between negation and change. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Dr. Philip Speiser brings over four decades of clinical and teaching experience, and is an Expressive Arts Therapist, Drama Therapist, and Psychodramatist. Throughout his career, he has been deeply engaged in integrating the arts with mental health practice, working with children, adolescents, families, and trauma-affected communities. Following 9/11, he developed and implemented arts-based trauma recovery programs in both New York and Boston, supporting individuals and communities in rebuilding and healing. He’s also a founding member of the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association (IEATA), where he served as co-chair. He’s a research associate at the Witwatersrand University, Drama for Life department in Johannesburg, South Africa, and also teaches at Lesley University. He continues to work across cultures in the fields of mental health, conflict transformation, and expressive arts.
