Tom is such a workhorse. And he wanted it so badly. 【Desperate Housewives S1E15】 【发音】[tɒm]/[tɑ:m] [ɪz] [sʌtʃ] [ə] [ˈwɜ:(r)k.hɔ:(r)s] [ænd] [hi:] [wɒntɪd]/[wɑ:ntɪd] [ɪt] [səʊ] [bædli] 【发音技巧】Tom is连读;such a连读;workhorse不完全失去爆破;and he不完全失去爆破;wanted it 连读;badly不完全失去爆破; 【翻译】Tom工作起来任劳任怨,他又是如此想要这份工作。 1. Checking out the new executive digs? 视察新的总裁办公室来了? digs 其实digs经常在英式英语中指的是apartment 租住的那种公寓 a room in someone's house that you pay money to live in 这里结合上下文也就理解成office比较合适 2. 在英语口语中,如果你说sb. is a workhorse 当然不会是说他是一只驮马啦,而是指这个人干很多活儿,还是特无聊的那种; a person who does a lot of work, especially of a type which is necessary but not interesting: 有的时候也可以用来指机器,长期负压工作还靠得住,不容易坏的; a machine, that performs dependably under heavy use eg: My husband never even looked at me. I was just a workhorse bringing up three children. 而“工作狂”的话,一般口语里面我们会用 workaholic来表达 a person who works a lot of the time and finds it difficult not to work 3. Lynette realized it was in her best interest to lie to the boss’s wife. in sb.’s best interest in the interest of sb.; in sb.'s own interest 都是一个意思;表示出于对某个人/自己最好的考虑 for one's benefit or advantage 这里的interest可以当做可数名词,也可以当做不可数名词。 eg: It's obviously in their interest to increase profits. eg: Is this policy in the interest of the townspeople? 这个政策是出于对镇上居民的考虑吗? eg: I suspect it's in your own best interest to quit now. Despite what you think, I'm only acting in your best interests.

【句子】-- Don’t get me wrong. She’s nice. But the truth is, there’s someone else. -- Oh, are you going steady? 【Desperate Housewives S1E15】 【发音】[dəʊnt] [get] [mi:] [rɒŋ]/[rɑ:ŋ] [ʃi:z] [naɪs] [bʌt] [ðə] [tru:θ] [ɪz] [ðeə(r)z] [ˈsʌm.wʌn] [els] [əʊ] [ɑ:(r)] [ju:] ['gəʊɪŋ] [ˈsted.i] 【发音技巧】don’t get me完全失去爆破+不完全失去爆破;but the不完全失去爆破;truth is连读;someone else连读; 【翻译】-- 别会错意,她很好。 I wasn’t that into her. 那今天视频对话中Bree说的: Are you going steady? go steady (with sb) to date someone exclusively eg: They've been going steady for a year now. eg: Don't ask her out—she's already going steady with Bobby. 口语中如果是go steady on sth. 意思就完全不一样了 口语中可以理解成 go easy on sth./ to not use too much of something 悠着点来,别过度使用某物 eg: Go steady on the milk, Dan - that's our last bottle. I’ll be firm. -- Better still, be brutal. It is used to say that a particular choice would be more satisfactory: eg: Why don't you give her a call or, better still, go and see her? Parents often don't approve of their children's decision to go steady.

Of course it’s not all coming up roses. He’s not gonna be able to come back to work for four … four and a half months. 【Desperate Housewives S1E15】 【发音】[əv] [kɔ:(r)s] [ɪts] [nɒt]/[nɑ:t] [ɔ:l]/[ɑ:l] ['kʌmɪŋ] [ʌp] [rəʊzɪz] [hi:z] [nɒt]/[nɑ:t] [ˈgə.nə]/[ˈgɑ:.nə] [bi:] ['eɪbl] [tʊ] [kʌm] [bæk] [tʊ] [wɜ:(r)k] [fɔ:(r)] [fɔ:(r)] [fɔ:(r)] [ænd] [ə] [hɑ:f]/[hæf] [mʌnθs] 【发音技巧】coming up连读;not gonna完全失去爆破;back to完全失去爆破;work for不完全失去爆破;and a连读;months的读音; 【翻译】不过也没有那么顺利啦! 【适用场合】 1. come up roses 有了好的结果,成功了,尤其是在困难/不利的情况下 to result in success or an exceptionally good outcome, especially in the face of doubts or difficulties eg: Those were difficult times but now everything's coming up roses. eg: It looked like the negotiations might break down at any stage, but everything came up roses in the end. 2. take the ball 怎么理解? Company still needs to expand, so I figure they need a fit, heart-smart guy like me to step up, take the ball. 其实这里应该理解成为take the ball and run (with it) 口语里也可以说:pick up the ball and run with it 把球捡起来,带着跑 引申义就是:to continue an activity or process that someone else has started, often when that person could not finish it or make it work 去继续别人之前开始,但是并未完成/并未结束的工作 eg: We had a very vague idea of what we wanted, but the marketing team just took the ball and ran with it. 对话: -- You called your boss a fool? -- I did. That was risky in retrospect. But, you know what, still he gave me the job! 这里in retrospect 可以理解成:in considering the past or a past event eg: In retrospect, I think my marriage was doomed from the beginning. It's one of those lessons that you can really only learn in retrospect.

【句子】-- So what's the word on Tim? -- He came through the triple bypass with flying colors. 【Desperate Housewives S1E15】 【发音】[səʊ] [ˈwɑ:ts]/[ˈwɒts] [ðə] [wɜ:(r)d] [ɒn]/[ɑ:n] [tɪm] [hi:] [keɪm] [θru:] [ðə] ['trɪpl] [ˈbaɪ.pɑ:s]/[ˈbaɪ.pæs] [wɪð] ['flaɪɪŋ] [ˈkʌlə(r)z] 【发音技巧】word on连读; 【翻译】-- Tim状况如何了? So what's the word on Tim? 英语口语中,当我们说What's the word? What's the good word? 是类似于Hello,或者How are you? eg: I haven't seen you in ages! What's the good word? If you do something with flying colors, you do it extremely well eg: Sam was rather nervous taking his final exam, but he passed with flying colors! eg: Your brother passed his apprenticeship with flying colors. He'll be a master builder in no time! eg: Paul came home with flying colors after the match. A ship's colours are its national flag. The image here is of a victorious battleship sailing back into port with its national flag flying. Is it a success to pass a graduation exam with flying colors only to forget the whole thing in 2-3 years' time?

I’m sorry to drop by on you unannounced. Do you have a moment? 【Desperate Housewives S1E15】 【发音】[aɪm] [ˈsɒri]/[ˈsɔ:ri] [tʊ] [drɒp]/[drɑ:p] [baɪ] [ɒn]/[ɑ:n] [ju:] [ˌʌnəˈnaʊnst] [du:] [ju:] [hæv] [ə] [ˈməʊ.mənt] 【发音技巧】drop by完全失去爆破;have a连读; 【翻译】不好意思我不请自来了,你有时间吗? 【适用场合】 drop by 之前节目中其实我们学习过 表示:to pay an informal visit to a person or a place 非正式地拜访某个人/去某地 其实口语中也可以说drop in或者drop over 然后强调去拜访某个人,可以在后面加上on sb. 这种用法一般强调,被看望的人之前并不知情,可以被称作是a surprise visit drop by on sb. drop in on sb. eg: Why don’t you drop by for coffee sometime? 为啥你不来坐坐,喝杯咖啡呢? eg: I thought I'd drop in on you while I was passing. eg: Be sure to drop by the next time you're in the area. eg: We'd love to drop over but we haven't got enough time on this trip. eg: I hate to drop in on people when they aren't expecting me. If you still have questions on the material, why don't you drop by my office sometime, and we'll go over everything step by step.

【句子】-- And I am freaking out that you’re not freaking out. -- Look, things will turn around. 【Desperate Housewives S1E15】 【发音】[ænd] [aɪ] [æm] [fri:kɪŋ] [aʊt] [ðæt] [jɔ:(r)] [nɒt]/[nɑ:t] [fri:kɪŋ] [aʊt] [lʊk] [θɪŋz] [wɪl] [tɜ:(r)n] [ə'raʊnd] 【发音技巧】and I连读;freaking out连读;not freaking不完全失去爆破;turn around连读; 【翻译】-- 让我很担心的是,你根本就不发愁! If you are freaked out or if something freaks you out, you become so angry, surprised, excited, or frightened that you cannot control yourself 因为愤怒/惊讶/激动或者害怕而失控 eg: Meeting my dad again after all these years really freaked me out. eg: Everybody freaked out when the fire alarm went off. 之前在学习Friends S1E1中Rachel的台词的时候也讲过freak out, > > 点我复习 < < 这里Carlos说的Things will turn around. eg: Turn around and let me look at your back. turn around的另外一层含义,就是我们今天视频片段中的用法 指的是:变好;有起色; to become changed for the better improve dramatically; 或者 if a business, economy, etc. turns around or sb. turns it around, it starts being successful after it has been unsuccessful for a time eg: The new strategy turned around sales. eg: The tutor turned around my son's performance in math.

I’m not saying to beg. You just have to step up from time to time. You have to see your opportunity and take it. Nobody respects a shrinking violet. 【Desperate Housewives S1E15】 【发音】[aɪm] [nɒt]/[nɑ:t] ['seɪɪŋ] [tʊ] [beg] [ju:] [dʒʌst] [hæv] [tʊ] [step] [ʌp] [frɒm]/[frɑ:m] [taɪm] [tʊ] [taɪm] [ju:] [hæv] [tʊ] [si:] [jɔ:(r)] [ˌɒp.əˈtjuː.nə.ti]/[ ˌɑ:.p.ə(r)ˈtjuː.nə.ti] [ænd] [teɪk] [ɪt] [ˈnəʊ.bə.di]/[ˈnəʊ.bɑ:.di] [rɪ'spekts] [ə] [ʃrɪŋkɪŋ] [ˈvaɪə.lət] 【发音技巧】not saying不完全失去爆破;just have不完全失去爆破;step up连读;opportunity美音浊化;take it连读; 【翻译】我没说去求他。 I didn’t get the V.P. gig. V.P. 一般来说指的是vice president 副总裁 gig [gɪg] 本意指的是鱼叉;排钩的意思 之前我们节目中也讲过,也可以用来指一次音乐表演 eg: The band is going to Atlanta to play a gig at the Fox Theatre. A job, especially one that is temporary or that has an uncertain future. 一份工作(经常指的是临时性质的,前景不明朗) eg: a typing/gardening/writing gig 一份打字的工作/一份园丁的工作/一份写作的工作 eg: He landed a gig writing a new employee manual. (有关land的这个用法,之前节目中提到过,意思是to get or achieve something good, especially in a way which seems easy or unexpected) a shrinking violet 什么意思呢? 其实这种说法经常用来指特别害羞,内向的人 a humorous way of describing a very shy person 因为紫罗兰本身这种花就有点默默无闻,很低调的。 Working on the sea and spotting whales seemed like a great gig.

【句子】-- So, what are you saying, that the twins murdered Martha? -- Well, I wouldn’t put it past them. 【Desperate Housewives S1E15】 【发音】[səʊ] [wɒt]/[wɑ:t] [ɑ:(r)] [ju:] ['seɪɪŋ] [ðæt] [ðə] [twɪnz] [ˈmɜ:(r).də(r)d] [ˈmɑ:(r)θə] [wel] [aɪ] [ˈwʊdənt] [pʊt] [ɪt] [pɑ:st]/[pæst] [ðəm] 【发音技巧】what are连读+美音浊化;that the不完全失去爆破;murdered Martha不完全失去爆破;wouldn’t put it 完全失去爆破+连读+美音浊化;past them不完全失去爆破; 【翻译】-- 所以,你是说,你觉得是双胞胎杀了Martha吗? 【适用场合】 今天这个表达not put it past someone (to do something) 经常用在什么场合: 你觉得那个坏事是…… It is used for saying that you think someone is capable of doing something bad or dishonest 或者If you say that you wouldn't put it past someone to do something bad, you mean that you would not be surprised if they did it. eg: -- Do you think Joe stole the money? -- Honestly, I wouldn't put it past him. He has no conscience. eg: I wouldn’t put it past him to steal from his own family. eg: He wouldn't put it past Caroline to have stopped work and gone home for the night, even though she knew how important it was. And I prefer not to tie up the line. 1. to keep someone busy, occupied, or engaged 让某个人十分忙碌,没有空闲 eg: The meeting tied up the entire staff for most of the afternoon. eg: I just have a couple of questions, so I won't tie you up for too long. 2. to block, impede, or delay something. 阻碍某事;延误; eg: The construction has been tying up traffic on Main Street for nearly a year now. They've tied our application up in court, so we haven't made any real progress lately.

We want you to be happy. 【Friends-S1E24】 【发音】[ˈlɪsən] [ˈbʌdi] [wɪə(r)] [dʒʌst] [lʊkɪŋ] [aʊt] [fɔ:(r)] [ju:] [wi:] [wɒnt]/[wɑ:nt] [ju:] [tʊ] [bi:] ['hæpi] 【发音技巧】looking out连读;want you音的同化; 【翻译】听着哥们,我们只是为了你着想。 Be careful! 所以look out for sb./sth. 1. 当心、注意;寻找; to be aware of one's surroundings in order to look for or be aware of something eg: You should look out for pickpockets. eg: Do look out for spelling mistakes in your homework. Wow, you’re gonna be making money hand over fist. 【Friends-S1E24】 【发音】[waʊ] [jɔ:(r)] [ˈgə.nə]/[ˈgɑ:.nə] [bi:] [ˈmeɪ.kɪŋ] [ˈmʌni] [hænd] [ˈəʊ.və(r)] [fɪst] 【发音技巧】hand over连读; 【翻译】很快你就能赚到一大笔钱了。 at a brisk pace or rate 以非常快的速率 eg: This doll is so popular that the manufacturer is making money hand over fist. eg: They were buying things hand over fist. eg: Business was good and we were making money hand over fist. eg: Bill is making money hand over fist these days -- he invented a pill that wives can give their husbands to stop them from snoring. The companies had no skills and almost all were losing money hand over fist.

I can cook something up for you. 2. 可以用来指to fabricate; to invent sth., especially in order to deceive sb. 捏造,编造; 明显的贬义色彩 eg: cook up an excuse 编造一个借口 eg: cook up a story 编造一个故事 eg: What ridiculous scheme has Sam cooked up now?
