Episode 18: Sagrada Familia

Last week I talked about Barcelona, the largest city of Catalonia in Spain. Today I want to tell you a bit more about the Sagrada Familia, the most famous church of Barcelona which is still being built. It is a very beautiful building, so if you want you can look up a picture of the Sagrada Familia online to know what I mean. Construction of the church started in 1882 and the current design was an idea of the architect Gaudi. He had his own unique style and combined two architectural styles, known as Gothic and Art Nouveau. He dedicated his whole life to the project, but he died in 1926 when less than a quarter of the project was finished. The construction depended on donations so it progressed slowly, and in the 1930's Spain was in a civil war, which was also a significant interruption for the construction. In the 1950's construction continued and thanks to computers it is now easier to make faster progress. The church should be finished in 2026, exactly 100 years after Gaudi's death. Although the church is not yet finished you can already visit, and the entrance fee is used to pay for the construction of the church. I think it is really worth it to go there and visit the church, because I have seen many churches in my life but the Sagrada Familia is really one of the most impressive ones I have ever seen. The decorations of the walls outside are very detailed and beautiful, and when you go inside the shapes of the pillars, ceiling and windows of the church are really impressive. Because of the shape of the pillars inside it almost feels like you are looking at a forest made of stone when you look up, and the windows are made of colored stained glass, so the sun shining through the windows creates beautiful light in different colors. It feels very magical, and I hope I can see it again sometime. It is a very popular place to visit though, so if you go there you should buy your entry tickets one or two weeks before you plan to go there so they are not sold out. When I am on vacation I like visiting these kinds of buildings because they are very relaxing and the feeling when you are inside is very special. I always think it is very impressive that people can come up with these kinds of ideas and build something like this. * Quarter:四分之一;一刻钟;季度 * Donations:捐赠(复数) * Progress:进步,进展 * Civil war:内战 * Interruption:暂停;打断;中断期 * Thanks to:由于;因为 * Although:虽然,尽管 * Pillars:柱子 * Ceiling:天花板 * Magical:魔法的;神奇的 * Sold out:售罄 * Come up with:想出,提出(指产生想法、计划、解决方案等) 主播:Daniel 校对:nan_nan

Episode 17: Barcelona

Hello and welcome to another episode of Weekend English Club. I just finished a long vacation and I am now back to make more episodes for the podcast. Today I want to talk about a city I visited during my vacation called Barcelona. I thought it was a very beautiful and impressive place. Barcelona is a city on the northeastern coast of Spain. It is the capital and largest city of a region called Catalonia, with a population of around 1.6 million people. Barcelona is a very famous city for tourists, because it has a very rich cultural history. The Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi had a large influence on the city, which is why it is such a beautiful city with many unique and famous buildings. The city has two universities and in 1992 the Olympics were held in Barcelona as well. It is one of the most visited places in the world, so during the summer it is very busy. More than 50 million people per year pass through the airport of Barcelona. The old medieval part of Barcelona is called the Gothic Quarter, and here you can see some beautiful medieval buildings like the Barcelona cathedral which was built 800 years ago. In this area is also a big market where you can find all kinds of fruit, seafood, spices and famous Spanish meat. Spain is famous for high quality pork meat, so if you are there it is definitely worth visiting the market for meat. As I mentioned before, the architect Antoni Gaudi designed many famous buildings in Barcelona. The most famous of these by far is a cathedral called the Sagrada Familia, which has been under construction since 1882 and is still not finished. They expect to finish building it in 2026, but you can already visit it. I think it is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world, and it has become a symbol of Barcelona. The style is different from any other buildings I know, but I can talk more about that another time.

Episode 16: The Alps

Hope you enjoy the summer :) Hello and welcome to the 16th episode of Weekend English Club. Today I will talk about the Alps, a mountain range in the north of Italy. The Alps are some of the most famous mountains in Europe, and I think they have a very interesting history and culture. They are most famous for their relationship to Italy, but they actually touch a few other countries as well, including France, Monaco, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, Austria and Slovenia. The tallest peak of the Alps is the Mont Blanc, a beautiful mountain on the French-Italian border. The Alps are the natural border of northern Italy, and they have always defended Italy from outside enemies. The ancient Roman Empire also relied on the mountains to protect them, and one of the most famous people to cross the mountains into Italy was general Hannibal. He was a great general who managed to cross the Alps with a large army and elephants which he used for war, more than 2000 years ago. He almost defeated the Roman Empire and because of this became one of the most famous generals in European history. The Alps are very large, so crossing them on foot is very difficult. In the year 1800 the French general Napoleon also managed to cross the Alps into Italy with 40.000 men, just like Hannibal once did, and Napoleon managed to then conquer most of Italy. The Alps became a famous subject for stories and art, and many mountain climbers were drawn to their natural beauty. There are a few places where you can cross the Alps on foot, and these were used for trade for a long time. This has always been difficult however, and in our modern times a few tunnels were built under the mountains to make traveling between countries much easier. The Alps have their own cultural traditions, and practices such as farming, cheese making and woodworking are still popular in the villages there. Nowadays tourism is also a big thing in the Alps, mostly for winter sports such as skiing. More than 120 million tourists per year visit the Alps, making it one of the most popular winter sports destinations in the world. * The Alps:阿尔卑斯山脉 * Relationship:关系 * Touch:接触,触及 * Defend::防御 * Rely on:依靠;依赖 * Cross:穿越,横渡 * General:将军,上将 * Defeat:击败,战胜 * Be drawn to:被...

Episode 15: Andes Mountains

Today I will talk about the Andes mountains of South America. The Andes mountains are the longest mountain range in the world, running through seven different countries. These countries are Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. It is almost 9000 kilometers long, with an average height of 4000 meters, but the tallest peak of the Andes is at a height of almost 7000 meters. The Andes mountains have an interesting history, mostly because of the Inca empire that existed in these mountains during the 15th and 16th centuries. This was a large, wealthy empire, and the Incan people built one of the most famous places in South America, a city known as Machu Picchu. They built this city on the peak of a mountain at a height of more than 2000 meters and you can still visit the ruins of that city today. It is part of the Andes mountains and in a very beautiful location. The Inca empire was conquered by the Spanish empire, who then took control of most of South America including the Andes mountains. There the Spanish also found one of the largest silver mines in the world near a place called Potosi, and many people were sent to the mountains to dig up all the silver for the Spanish. The climate of the Andes is different depending on where you are, because it is so long. In the south it is rainy and cool, in the central area it is dry while the northern Andes are rainy and warm, and the weather can change a lot between small distances. Since it is a mountain range, you can also find volcanoes there. Some of the highest volcanoes in the world are in the Andes, in an area known as the Andean Volcanic Belt. Many people do not know that some very famous types of food come from the region around the Andes mountains. Did you know that potatoes, corn, tomatoes and chocolate all come from South America? These things seem so normal to us now, but before the Spanish brought them from South America to Europe and Asia, we did not have any of them here. I hope this made you more curious about the Andes mountains and the things that were found there in the past.

Episode 14: Mount Everest

Hello everyone and welcome to episode 14 of Weekend English Club. I want to start talking about mountains in the coming weeks, and will start with the most famous mountain, called Mount Everest. Mount Everest is part of the Himalayas, a long area of mountains on the Western border of China. The mountain is both part of China and part of Nepal, and the border between these two countries is located on the mountain. In English the mountain was named after George Everest, a British government worker, but the mountain also has older names in the Tibetan and Nepali languages. In the Nepali language they use a name which translates to “goddess of the sky” and in Tibet they have a name which means “holy mother”. Mount Everest is famous because it is the tallest mountain in the entire world, and in 2020 the peak of the mountain was recorded to be at a height of almost 9000 meters. Nothing else in the world is taller than that. Climbing the mountain is incredibly dangerous and can not be done without much preparation and training. At the top there is very little oxygen and it is extremely cold. It is hard to breathe and with all the snow and wind you can easily freeze or fall down, so most people who go up the mountain now use local guides. The first people we know who tried to climb the mountain were British, starting in 1921. The first attempts were not successful, and during one of them two people even disappeared. Only the ninth attempt was successful in reaching the peak of the mountain. The men who did so were Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay from Nepal, in 1953. The temperature on the mountain is always below zero, and around January it can be -36 degrees. * Border: 国界,边境 * Nepal:尼泊尔 * Be named after:以...

Episode 13: Eiffel tower

Hello everyone and welcome to the thirteenth episode of Weekend English Club. Today's episode will be about the most famous monument in Paris, called the Eiffel tower. When you talk about Paris, one of the first things most people will think of is the Eiffel tower. It is such a famous monument in France, it is hard to imagine Paris without the Eiffel tower. But of course, it was not always there. There was a time when Paris had no Eiffel tower, and that was before 1889. In 1889 Paris hosted an event called the world's fair, where different countries could show off their culture and achievements. This was also a way for France to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French revolution. The tower was designed and built by a company led by a man named Gustave Eiffel, which is why it is called the Eiffel tower. Many people doubted it would be possible to build the tower when the design was published, but the designer believed it could be done. The builders started to build the tower in 1887. After two years of work the tower was finished, and it was the tallest thing ever built by humans until then. It is completely made from iron and 300 meters tall. There are three floors that you can visit, with restaurants on the first and second floor. You can buy a ticket to take the stairs and walk all the way up, or take the elevator. If you want to go up, it takes 600 steps. All the way at the top floor is a private apartment built for Gustave Eiffel, which you can also visit. Building the tower showed the world what was possible with all the new technology of the time, so it was very impressive. In 1991, the Eiffel tower was listed as part of a World Heritage Site, and in 2022 the tower was visited by almost 6 million people. That means it is one of the most visited monuments in the world. At night the tower is especially beautiful, since they use big lights to light up the tower. You can see it from almost anywhere in Paris, and it has become so famous that I cannot imagine France without the Eiffel tower.

Episode 12: The Colosseum

Last week I did not manage to record an episode because I was so busy, but today I will talk about the Colosseum in Rome. In the center of Rome, the capital of Italy, you can find a very large monument called the Colosseum. It is one of the most famous monuments of European history, and it was built a long time ago. It is a huge building and was surely an impressive thing to see in the time it was built. The Roman empire was very large and powerful in the first century in Europe, and it was them who built the Colosseum. The Romans started building it under emperor Vespasianus and it was finished in the year 80. It is the largest ancient theater ever built with a length of 189 meters and walls that are 48 meters high. The Colosseum was used to entertain people, just like sports stadiums we have today. Rome was one of the biggest cities in the world back then, and the Colosseum could contain up to 80.000 people. There were special seats for the emperor and Roman politicians, called senators. They were the most powerful men in Rome so they got the best seats. But the Romans did not go to the Colosseum to watch people play football or basketball. The world was very different back then, and the Romans wanted something more exciting. They loved watching gladiators, men trained to fight with real weapons. These were the superstars of the Roman world, but their job was of course very dangerous, and they even fought wild animals like lions and bears while people watched. There were also theater plays, and maybe most impressively, the Romans could fill the Colosseum with water and bring boats inside to show the people what a battle at sea looked like. After the Roman empire disappeared, people stopped using the Colosseum for entertainment and it was abandoned. It still stands there though, and nowadays millions of people visit it every year, more than in the time of the Romans.

Episode 11: The Great Wall

Welcome everyone to another episode of Weekend English club, where I help you improve your English with short stories. Today is the eleventh episode of this podcast and today I will talk a little bit about the Great Wall of China. I think that in the west, the Great Wall is probably the most famous Chinese monument. If you ask someone what they know about China, they will probably mention the Great Wall. It is an amazing monument, and I don't think there is anything like it in the rest of the world. I think a lot of people don't know that several walls were built in Northern China, with the most famous wall being built during the Ming dynasty. It is the longest building in the world, more than 6000 kilometers long. You can follow the wall all the way from Gansu province to Beijing. Why did the Ming emperors and others before them build these walls though? Well, the most important reason was to protect the northern border of China at the time. Back then, China was often fighting with the Mongol tribes in the north. The wall was built to keep these people out, and the strongest part of the wall was built near Beijing to protect the capital. It makes sense when you look at history, because the Mongols did invade China before and started the Yuan dynasty. The Ming emperors were afraid of something like that happening again, so they put a lot of effort into protecting the northern border. Of course we know China has always been very big, so the Great Wall is also very long. Building it was hard work, and not a nice experience for the people who had to do it. Back then the workers did not have the rights they have today and people had to transport stone from far away to build the wall. In some places they had to carry stone into the mountains, and most of the builders did not earn much money and got little food. It was hard work, but thanks to those people the wall was built and China now has one of the most famous monuments in the world. And it did work for a long time. The wall could be used to keep people out of China, but also as a road for traveling the northern border. But after almost 300 years, the people in the north made it past the wall again and started a new dynasty, the Qing dynasty. After this China would be ruled by Manchu people until the 20th century. * Probably: 大概;或许 * Monument:纪念碑;遗物;名胜古迹 * Dynasty:朝代 * Emperor:皇帝 * Border:国境,边界 * Mongol tribes:蒙古部落 * Makes sense:容易理解的;讲得通;有道理;合理的 * Invade:侵略;武力入侵 * Be afraid of:害怕 * Effort:努力;艰难的尝试;精力 * Manchu people:满族人 主播:Daniel 校对:nan_nan

Episode 10: Pyramids

这一集我们来讲一下埃及金字塔~ Welcome everyone to another episode of Weekend English club, where I help you improve your English with short stories. Today is already episode 10, which means I have been doing this for 10 weeks. For this episode I wanted to talk about something related to history, since history and culture are my great passions. As you might have guessed from the title of the episode, today's subject is pyramids. What are pyramids? Well, a pyramid is a type of structure in the shape of a triangle. The most famous ones can be found in Egypt, and they are extremely old. There are more than 100 pyramids in Egypt, and the oldest one is more than 4500 years old and still exists today. Of course it was not easy to build these pyramids, because they are enormous stone structures which took a long time to build. Great blocks of stone had to be transported on rivers or through the desert, and there are many different ideas about how the pyramids were built. The most famous and biggest pyramid is the pyramid of Giza, which was the tallest structure built by humans for more than 3800 years and needed around 4000 people to build it. It was almost 150 meters high, and they used more than 2 million blocks of stone. Can you imagine convincing people nowadays to work on a project like this? And back then they did not even have all the modern tools we have now. So why did the Egyptians build these pyramids? Well, most of them were used as tombs for the rulers of ancient Egypt, called the pharaoh. The pharaoh was the ruler of the Egyptians, and in ancient times they were very rich and powerful. Only someone so powerful could order people to build a pyramid for him, which is why so many can be found in Egypt. Deep inside the pyramid the pharaoh would be buried, together with many valuable treasures. The most famous treasure found in a pyramid is the mask of pharaoh Tutankhamun, a beautiful mask made of gold which the pharaoh was buried with. The Egyptians were not the only people who made pyramids though, but if you want to know more about pyramids outside Egypt, maybe I can talk about that another time.

Episode 9: Trains

Hello everyone and welcome to episode 9 of Weekend English Club, where I tell short stories to help you train your English. Nowadays there are many different types of trains, from slow trains to super fast trains. There used to be a time when there were no trains in the world, but the invention of trains changed our societies a lot. Today I want to talk a little bit about the history of trains. For most of human history the only ways to travel on land were by walking or by riding horses. This took a long time of course, so many people would never leave their hometown unless they had a good reason to do so. Transporting things on land also took a long time, but everything changed when trains were invented. In the 19th century the United Kingdom started a process that changed the world forever, called the industrial revolution. During this time many new things were invented that completely changed how we live, and one of those things was the train. A few different types of trains were invented, but in 1825 a train was invented in the United Kingdom which could transport people between two cities for the first time in history. These first trains used the power of steam to move and soon they could be found all over Europe. They were not very fast compared to the trains we have now, but for the people back then they were very fast. Railways were built all over Europe, and later all over the world. Nowadays there are many different types of trains which use different kinds of power to move, like electricity. It might seem normal to us now, but imagine if you had to walk for example from Beijing to Shanghai. It would take you two weeks or more, but thanks to the high speed train that exists now you can travel between these cities in only four hours. The first trains only had a speed of around 40 kilometers per hour, but this high speed train can go up to 350 kilometers per hour, so you can imagine why trains changed the world so much. Next time you take the train to travel to another city, try to think what your trip would have been like if trains did not exist. * Used to be: 曾经是 * Invention: 发明;创造 * Society:社会;societies 社会(复数) * Unless:除非 * Ride horses:骑马 * Transport:(用交通工具)运输;运送 * Process:过程;进程 * industrial revolution:工业革命 * Completely:完全地 * Steam:蒸汽;蒸汽动力 * Compared to:与...

Episode 8: Driving on the left

Hello everyone and welcome to episode 8 of Weekend English Club, where I tell short stories to help you train your English. Last week when I talked about Audi I also mentioned cars driving on the left side of the road. Driving on the left side is not that common so I decided to talk a little bit about why some countries drive on the left while most countries drive on the right. Actually, there are different theories about why some countries drive on the left. Some people say it is because the ancient Romans used to drive on the left, and European countries followed their example. Others say it is because in medieval times, knights used to ride their horses on the left side of the road so they could greet people with their right hand. At least we know for sure that for a long time in history many places did not have strict rules about driving on the left or right side of the road, at least until modern cars were invented. We do know that the United Kingdom decided to drive on the left side, and they spread this rule to the many countries they conquered around the world. A lot of countries used to drive on the left but switched to driving on the right later. For example, Canada changed the rules because the United States drives on the right, and they wanted to drive on the same side as the United States. This makes things easier when you have to drive across the border. In China, some areas used to drive on the left as well, but in 1946 the government decided that everyone should drive on the right. Only in Hong Kong and Macau do people still drive on the left because of their history with Portugal and the United Kingdom. Many other countries like India, Australia, Pakistan and Japan still drive on the left side, so this can be confusing for tourists who are not used to it, but I think it is interesting to see the different rules between countries around the world.

Episode 7: Audi

Hello everyone and welcome to episode 7 of Weekend English Club, where I tell short stories to help you train your English. The past few weeks I have been talking about holidays but today I will talk about something different. I will talk about the German car brand Audi, so you will hear more words related to car technology. The history of Audi starts in 1909, when its founder started a business in Zwickau, a city in the eastern part of Germany. The founder was a man called August Horch. His last name Horch means listen in English, and the Latin word for listen is Audi. This is how Audi got its name. Audi started its history creating cars with powerful engines and was the first German car manufacturer to build a car with the steering wheel on the left side. It used to be more common to have the steering wheel on the right side, but this changed with time. Their headquarters used to be in the east of Germany, but later they decided to move their company headquarters to West Germany and continued their production from there. Nowadays Audi is quite a big brand, and they produce more than a million cars every year. Audi is known for its luxury and sports cars, such as the Audi RS6. The letters RS stand for Racing Sports, so the name can give you an idea of what kind of car this is. It is a car model with a powerful V8 engine and can reach a speed of 250 kilometers per hour. Aside from these kinds of cars, Audi also has plans to produce more electric cars. Now we can look at the vocabulary for this week. 而出名 * Luxury:奢侈的;豪华的 * Stand for: 代表;象征 * Speed:速度 * Aside from:除了...
