Today I will talk about the Andes mountains of South America. The Andes mountains are the longest mountain range in the world, running through seven different countries. These countries are Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. It is almost 9000 kilometers long, with an average height of 4000 meters, but the tallest peak of the Andes is at a height of almost 7000 meters.

The Andes mountains have an interesting history, mostly because of the Inca empire that existed in these mountains during the 15th and 16th centuries. This was a large, wealthy empire, and the Incan people built one of the most famous places in South America, a city known as Machu Picchu. They built this city on the peak of a mountain at a height of more than 2000 meters and you can still visit the ruins of that city today. It is part of the Andes mountains and in a very beautiful location. The Inca empire was conquered by the Spanish empire, who then took control of most of South America including the Andes mountains.

There the Spanish also found one of the largest silver mines in the world near a place called Potosi, and many people were sent to the mountains to dig up all the silver for the Spanish.

The climate of the Andes is different depending on where you are, because it is so long. In the south it is rainy and cool, in the central area it is dry while the northern Andes are rainy and warm, and the weather can change a lot between small distances.

Since it is a mountain range, you can also find volcanoes there. Some of the highest volcanoes in the world are in the Andes, in an area known as the Andean Volcanic Belt.

Many people do not know that some very famous types of food come from the region around the Andes mountains. Did you know that potatoes, corn, tomatoes and chocolate all come from South America? These things seem so normal to us now, but before the Spanish brought them from South America to Europe and Asia, we did not have any of them here.
