Welcome everyone to another episode of Weekend English club, where I help you improve your English with short stories.

Today is already episode 10, which means I have been doing this for 10 weeks. For this episode I wanted to talk about something related to history, since history and culture are my great passions. As you might have guessed from the title of the episode, today's subject is pyramids.

What are pyramids? Well, a pyramid is a type of structure in the shape of a triangle. The most famous ones can be found in Egypt, and they are extremely old. There are more than 100 pyramids in Egypt, and the oldest one is more than 4500 years old and still exists today.

Of course it was not easy to build these pyramids, because they are enormous stone structures which took a long time to build. Great blocks of stone had to be transported on rivers or through the desert, and there are many different ideas about how the pyramids were built. The most famous and biggest pyramid is the pyramid of Giza, which was the tallest structure built by humans for more than 3800 years and needed around 4000 people to build it. It was almost 150 meters high, and they used more than 2 million blocks of stone.

Can you imagine convincing people nowadays to work on a project like this? And back then they did not even have all the modern tools we have now. So why did the Egyptians build these pyramids? Well, most of them were used as tombs for the rulers of ancient Egypt, called the pharaoh. The pharaoh was the ruler of the Egyptians, and in ancient times they were very rich and powerful. Only someone so powerful could order people to build a pyramid for him, which is why so many can be found in Egypt. Deep inside the pyramid the pharaoh would be buried, together with many valuable treasures. The most famous treasure found in a pyramid is the mask of pharaoh Tutankhamun, a beautiful mask made of gold which the pharaoh was buried with.

The Egyptians were not the only people who made pyramids though, but if you want to know more about pyramids outside Egypt, maybe I can talk about that another time.
