Episode 6: Christmas

Hello everyone and welcome to episode 6 of Weekend English Club, where I tell short stories to help you train your English. This week I want to talk about another holiday, Christmas. Christmas was always one of my favorite holidays, celebrated at the end of the year. Christmas is also a Christian holiday and celebrated in all Western countries, but it is also popular in other countries like Japan. I think a lot of countries have different ways of celebrating Christmas, but there are a few things that are the same everywhere. For example, Santa Claus is very important. A big old man dressed in red with a large white beard who visits every house to bring gifts to children who have been nice that year. Some people like to hang big socks on the wall so Santa Claus can leave gifts inside when he visits during the night. Otherwise, he will leave them under the Christmas tree. When I was a child my parents would buy a Christmas tree every year and put it in our living room. I really like them because they smell very nice, just like the forest. We would decorate it with Christmas balls and lights in different colors, and leave it there until the new year. Lots of cities will also put Christmas trees outside in December, so you can see them everywhere. I think I always liked Christmas so much because it is a very cozy holiday. We get some days off from work and school to be with our family at the end of the year, and my family would always have a big Christmas dinner together. I heard that in China some people give apples to each other during Christmas, but we do not do that in my country. So you see, Christmas can be different everywhere but it is always a good time to spend with your family and friends.

Episode 5: Easter

Hello everyone and welcome to episode 5 of Weekend English Club, where I tell short stories to help you train your English. Today I will tell you about another holiday called Easter. It is a Christian holiday celebrated on a different day every year, but usually somewhere around April. So what is Easter about? For Christians, Easter is a religious holiday where they celebrate Jesus coming back to life. But for people who are not religious in many Western countries it is a bit different. My family was not religious, so when I was growing up I did not know anything about the religious story of Easter. For people like us, Easter is a day where we eat a lot of chocolate eggs and have a big Easter breakfast. My parents would tell me that the Easter bunny had hidden chocolate eggs around the house, and then I would go look for them. After I found them all, I could eat them. Most Western countries will have a day off work on Easter, so people might start the day with a big breakfast and then spend the rest of the day at home doing things like hiding eggs or painting them. It is common in the West for people to paint eggs during Easter. All you need is some boiled eggs, a paintbrush and paint. If you look up Easter eggs online you can see a lot of beautiful colorful eggs. If you want to make this kind of painted eggs, do not forget to boil them first, because you can break them easily if they are not boiled. Then after you finish painting the eggs, you can still eat them later. So why are eggs so important during Easter? Well, I read that since a very long time ago eggs were seen as a symbol of life. This is why eggs were used by Christians for Easter and this tradition still exists today. Maybe you can also try painting eggs sometime and share them with your friends. Easter can be a very fun day. Please read the vocabulary along with me. Thank you for listening and I will see you again next week.

Episode 4: King's day

Please read along here! Hello everybody and welcome to another episode of Weekend English Club. This is the fourth episode of the podcast and as I mentioned in episode 3, today I will talk a little bit about a Dutch holiday called King's day. Last week on the 27th of April, it was the birthday of the king of the Netherlands. Did you know the Netherlands still has a king? Every year on his birthday, we get a day off from work and the government will celebrate his birthday. This tradition started in 1885 and is similar to a national day like they have in different countries. Every year on this day the king will visit one city in the Netherlands where there will be a lot of events and celebrations, like concerts and markets. Amsterdam is always a very popular place for people to visit during King's day, and many tourists from outside the country also go there to experience the holiday. Usually, the whole city turns orange as people dress up in orange clothes and decorate the streets with orange things and national flags. This is because orange is the color of the royal family. There will also be concerts in Amsterdam and people taking their boats on the canals to party on the water. People can sell things in the street on King's day, so sometimes you can find some nice things to buy from people if you walk around in the streets. Because it's so busy in Amsterdam on this day, trams don't go to the city center and cars are not allowed to enter the city either because it is so crowded. I usually avoid the city because it's too busy for me, but a lot of people like to go there to experience the lively atmosphere of the crowds. The concept of King's day might sound strange if you are from a country without a royal family, or maybe you think it sounds fun. Maybe if you visit the Netherlands sometime you can see what it is like for yourself. I will now read out this week's words, and you can practice with me. I hope you enjoyed listening to this episode, and I will see you again next week. * Dutch: 荷兰的 * Celebrate: 庆祝 * Events:事件;既定活动 * Celebrations:庆祝活动 * concerts: 演唱会;音乐会 * decorate:装饰 * royal family: 皇室家族 * Trams: 有轨电车 * Avoid: 避免 * lively: 生动的 * Atmosphere: 氛围 * the crowds: 人群; 一大群人 * strange: 奇怪的;陌生的 * Is similar to…: 与...

Episode 3: Guangzhou - part 2

Read along here! Hello everyone and welcome to the third episode of Weekend English Club. I hope you had a good Saturday and this week I will talk a little bit more about Guangzhou. I heard there is a lot of rain and a hurricane happening now in Guangzhou so I hope everyone there is staying safe and doing well. There is a lot I can say about Guangzhou so I thought it would be good to spend two episodes talking about this city. If you listened to last week's episode you know I visited Guangzhou not too long ago and I really enjoyed being there. I think what I liked the most about Guangzhou was the food and the nature. I come from a cold country in Northern Europe, so most months there are very grey and a bit cold. Guangzhou is the complete opposite, because it's always green, warm and you can eat very good fruit the whole year. I really enjoyed eating so many different fruits which I can not eat in the Netherlands, like mango, lychee, starfruit, passion fruit and more. I also experienced something called zaocha (早茶). In English it means morning tea, but you don't just have tea. It is more like a big breakfast at a round table where you can order a lot of different dishes and share them with your friends and family. If you never had this before I think you really should because the food was super good and delicious, and my favorite dish was hongmichang (红米肠). If you have a chance to visit Guangzhou you should try it. I also went to a park called Yuexiu park (越秀公园) which is very big and very beautiful. It is very green and you can walk up the stairs to the top of the hill and see a statue of the five goats of Guangzhou. This statue represents the legend of how long ago five gods on goats came to the area and gave people food and since then Guangzhou would always have good harvests and was known as the city of five goats (五羊城). If you visit Guangzhou you can go have zaocha and then visit Yuexiu park to see the statue of the five goats. It's a nice way to spend your day when it's sunny, so please go there sometime. Next week I will talk a little bit more about a festival from my country called King's Day, so there will be a lot of new words. See you next time!

Episode 2: Guangzhou - part 1

Read along here! Welcome to the second episode of Weekend English. I hope you are having a good weekend, and today and next week I will talk a little bit about Guangzhou. I visited Guangzhou some time ago, so let me tell you a bit about my impression of the city. The first thing you will notice in Guangzhou is that the city is very very big. Millions of people live in Guangzhou, so the city has a larger population than some European countries. Because of this the city is very crowded, with people, cars and scooters everywhere. I noticed a lot of the cars in Guangzhou are electric cars, so they are better for the environment. The electric cars have green license plates, and other cars have blue license plates. I thought this is very interesting because outside China you can not see this difference. I really had to get used to the traffic when I first arrived in Guangzhou, but the most shocking thing to me was probably the metro system. I have never seen a metro as crowded as the Guangzhou metro, especially on line 3. There were so many people on line three, I almost could not get out of the metro and had to push my way through all the people to get out. Did you know more than 8 million people use the Guangzhou metro every day? It is the third busiest metro in the whole world, and you can really feel it when you are there. But I have to say, although it is super busy, I was very impressed with how clean the metro is, so it looks very good. In my hometown, the metro is not always so clean. In Amsterdam we only have 4 metro lines so it is much smaller than Guangzhou. Have you used the Guangzhou metro? What did you think of it? Next week I will talk a little bit more about Guangzhou, so I hope you will be here again next weekend. Until next time! * impression: 印象 * impressed: 使...留下深刻印象 * notice: 注意,留意 * million: 百万 * population: 人口 * crowded: 拥挤的 * scooter: 小型摩托车 * electric car: 电动车 * license plates: 车牌 * probably: 大概 * metro: 地铁 * especially: 尤其 * a little bit: 一点点 * push my way through: 穿过,挤过 主播: Daniel 校对:nan_nan

Episode 1: Amsterdam

Read along here! Welcome to the first episode of weekend English club. With this podcast I hope to help you improve your English listening skills with the help of short and hopefully entertaining stories. Today's episode will be the first in a series about different cities and their culture. The first city I will talk about today is my hometown, Amsterdam. Amsterdam is the capital city of the Netherlands, a small country in Europe next to Germany. Almost one million people live in the city, so it is not very large compared to many Chinese cities. However, the city was very important for some time and many tourists still visit it every day. People have lived in Amsterdam for more than 700 years, but it became one of the most important and richest European cities in the 17th century. This was a time 400 years ago when people from all over the world came to Amsterdam to trade and make a lot of money. One of the reasons they came to Amsterdam was that Amsterdam is on the coast, and from Amsterdam you can travel on rivers all the way to Germany and France. This is why the city still has a lot of beautiful old buildings from that time, because all the rich people who lived in the city wanted to live in the best houses they could buy. Many famous people have lived in Amsterdam, and one of the most famous people in the Netherlands might be the painter Rembrandt van Rijn. During the 17th century many rich people liked to collect paintings for their homes and Rembrandt was one of the best painters alive at that time. His paintings became so famous that you can still find them in museums all over the world, and if you visit Amsterdam you can still visit the house he lived in. Since many famous painters lived in the Netherlands, you can find many museums in Amsterdam with art from all over the world. Although Amsterdam is not as important as it once was, it is still a very international city where people from all over the world meet each other. For example, in the city center you can find a Chinese neighborhood where the street names are even written in Chinese. This is because many Cantonese people who worked on ships came to Amsterdam and decided to stay and live there. This is where you can find a lot of very good restaurants, thanks to the Chinese influence. I think Amsterdam is very unique because the shape of the city is something you will not find in many other cities. This is because of the canals, which look like rings surrounding the city. It is hard to explain, but if you look up a photo of Amsterdam from the sky you can see the lines of water in the city. Because of these canals, you can take your boat and travel through the city on water, which is something a lot of people like to do for fun. Sometimes so many people want to do this when it is sunny outside, that they actually create traffic jams on the water with all their boats. The most common way for people to travel around in Amsterdam is with their bicycles. Because the country is totally flat, it is perfect for cycling around. There are actually more bicycles than people in the city because of this. Everywhere in the city you will see special roads for bikes, so you can safely and quickly get to your destination. If you are visiting, you can rent bicycles everywhere for traveling around, but you will have to be careful if you are not used to it, since the traffic can be very chaotic in the busy parts of the city. Cycling around is usually better than driving a car though, because the city is very old and there is not much space for cars to drive around. I am curious to hear what you think of Amsterdam and I hope you learned something new. Are there any other cities you want me to talk about? Please let me know, and until next time. * Episode: 集 * Series: 系列 * Podcast: 播客 * Capital city: 首都 * The Netherlands: 荷兰 * Tourists: 游客 * Century: 世纪 * Trade: 交易 * Cantonese: 广东话的 * Influence: 影响 * Unique: 独特的,非常特别的 * Canals: 运河 * Surrounding: 周围的,附近的 * Explain: 解释 * Look up: 查找 * Travel through: 在...里穿越旅行 * Traffic jam: 交通堵塞 * Rent: 租 * Chaotic: 混乱的 * one of the: ... 其中之一 * all over the world: 全世界 * on ships: 船上 主播:Daniel 校对:nan_nan
