Hello everyone and welcome to the thirteenth episode of Weekend English Club. Today's episode will be about the most famous monument in Paris, called the Eiffel tower.

When you talk about Paris, one of the first things most people will think of is the Eiffel tower. It is such a famous monument in France, it is hard to imagine Paris without the Eiffel tower. But of course, it was not always there. There was a time when Paris had no Eiffel tower, and that was before 1889.

In 1889 Paris hosted an event called the world's fair, where different countries could show off their culture and achievements. This was also a way for France to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French revolution.

The tower was designed and built by a company led by a man named Gustave Eiffel, which is why it is called the Eiffel tower. Many people doubted it would be possible to build the tower when the design was published, but the designer believed it could be done. The builders started to build the tower in 1887. After two years of work the tower was finished, and it was the tallest thing ever built by humans until then.

It is completely made from iron and 300 meters tall. There are three floors that you can visit, with restaurants on the first and second floor. You can buy a ticket to take the stairs and walk all the way up, or take the elevator. If you want to go up, it takes 600 steps. All the way at the top floor is a private apartment built for Gustave Eiffel, which you can also visit. Building the tower showed the world what was possible with all the new technology of the time, so it was very impressive. In 1991, the Eiffel tower was listed as part of a World Heritage Site, and in 2022 the tower was visited by almost 6 million people. That means it is one of the most visited monuments in the world.

At night the tower is especially beautiful, since they use big lights to light up the tower. You can see it from almost anywhere in Paris, and it has become so famous that I cannot imagine France without the Eiffel tower.
