It is a very Chinese time to be alive

Pixel Perfect

从喝热水、学中文,到穿唐装、追中国短剧,越来越多美国年轻人开始说自己正处在 “a very Chinese time of my life”。 A year after the so-called “TikTok refugees” moved into Xiaohongshu, American internet culture has found a new twist — this time, young Americans want to “become Chinese.” From drinking hot water and learning Mandarin on Duolingo to wearing the Adidas Tang jackets and binge-watching Chinese dramas, more and more are saying they are living through “a very Chinese time of my life.” This online trend, known as Chinamaxxing, raises a question: is this a genuine shift in cultural identity, or just another wave of absurdist internet play? In this episode, we unpack where the trend came from, how it spread, and the rebellious energy behind it. As China shifts from a highly politicized “other” to something playful, ironic, and newly reimagined online, what does that change really mean? And as Chinese people, how do we feel watching others suddenly want to “become us”? Proud, annoyed, amused — or something more complicated? Join us as we explore this internet-age Chinese high-glow moment. 【时间轴 The When】 * 03:18 什么是China Maxxing? * 06:47 Does Drinking Hot Water and Wearing Adidas Jackets Make You Chinese? * 10:22 ABCs vs. Young Americans: Two Different Logics of “Becoming Chinese” * 18:31 From Xue Hua Piao Piao to Tina: How Chinese Memes Go Viral Through Misinterpretation and Remix * 23:12 Rebellion Against the Parent Generation by Young Americans * 27:48 The Divide Between Internet Culture and Real-World Perception * 36:44 Boba, Temu, DeepSeek: Chinese Elements in Everyday American Life * 41:03 Cultural Influence or Cultural Flattening? * 45:27 As Chinese, Do We Feel Proud, Annoyed, or Amused? * 49:58 What Happens When the Meme Enters the Mainstream? The Links】 WIRED: Why Everyone Is Suddenly in a ‘Very Chinese Time’ in Their Lives 【支持我们 Please Support Us】 如果喜欢这期节目并愿意支持我们: * 海外用户:patreon.com/c/pixelperfect_xxrl * 海内用户:afdian.com/a/pixelperfectpod * 商务合作邮箱:[email protected] If you like our show and want to support us, please consider the following: * Those Abroad: patreon.com/c/pixelperfect_xxrl * Those in China: afdian.com/a/pixelperfectpod * Business Inquiries Email: [email protected]

AI video is getting good but why are we still eating slop

Pixel Perfect

Scroll, scroll…huh, this video is kind of interesting, but something feels off…Is it AI?? As AI-generated video technology advances, the hosts of Pixel Perfect also have wasted huge amounts of time every day just trying to figure out whether a video we saw on social media was made by AI. Like it or not, we have to admit: from the six-fingered hands and illegible text of a few years ago to today’s deceptively realistic videos of backyard trampoline bunnies and package-thief security-cam clips, AI video quality keeps improving, and our opinion on it has to keep updating too. In this episode, we invited Coco to join us as a guest. After working at Google, she’s now the CEO of OpenArt, an AI video-generation platform and community. We talked about the rapid evolution of the tech itself, and also about how we—as social media users—make sense of AI videos that are now ubiquitous. Coco said she believes AI video generation will become an empowering tool that lets anyone become an internet celebrity. So if filming and editing are no longer necessary skills, what will be the core competitive edge of the next generation of top-tier creators? The When】 * 01:30 - OpenArt CEO Coco介绍过去三年图片和视频AI的技术迭代 * 03:49 - 从生成六根手指的DALL-E到百花齐放的中美AI工具 * 15:03 - 创作平权:AI如何赋予普通人讲故事的能力 * 24:08 - 为什么模糊的监控视角更容易让AI视频以假乱真 * 31:12 - OpenArt工作流:故事板、Agent与长叙事生成 * 34:47 - 视频生成的下一个里程碑是世界模型(World Model)吗? * 51:09 - 外国山海经:一个AI原生的网络热梗 * 58:41 - 版权保护、AI标签标注与未来的内容生态 * 01:30 - Coco, OpenArt’s CEO, introduces the tech evolution of AI videos * 03:49 - From DALL-E to a thousand American and Chinese AI video tools * 15:03 - Empowering everyone to become video creators * 24:08 - Why it’s so damn hard to tell a security camera video is AI-generated * 31:12 - How OpenArt works: storyboards, AI agents, and long narratives * 34:47 - World Model is the next milestone of video generation * 42:01 - How to excel as a content creator in the future * 51:09 - Italian Brainrot: an AI-native meme * 58:41 - Copyrights, AI content labeling, and the future of content creation 【我们是谁 Who We Are】 新新人类是一档由几个与互联网一起长大的新生代科技记者主持的播客,致力于站在中美交汇点上,解读全球科技潮流与人文的交织。 * 马修:一个网瘾晚期的全职养猫人 * 杜安蕤:一个想当裁缝的科技/文化撰稿人 * 一闻:一个对地铁比手机更上瘾的记者 【拓展链接 The Links】 * OpenArt的官网 * How I learned to stop worrying and love AI slop * OpenAI’s new social app is filled with terrifying Sam Altman deepfakes 【支持我们 Please Support Us】 如果喜欢这期节目并愿意支持我们: * 海外用户:patreon.com/c/pixelperfect_xxrl * 海内用户:afdian.com/a/pixelperfectpod * 商务合作邮箱:[email protected] If you like our show and want to support us, please consider the following: * Those Abroad: patreon.com/c/pixelperfect_xxrl * Those in China: afdian.com/a/pixelperfectpod * Business Inquiries Email: [email protected]

We Fell Into the Group Livestream Rabbit Hole

Pixel Perfect

From leg-sweep dances to catchphrases like “Baby, hop on,” and from All Things Grow to Backflow (N.B. all of these are too Chinese to translate), anyone who’s scrolled through short-video apps lately has likely had these group-streaming hits stuck in their head. Unlike traditional solo livestreams, group streaming features multiple attractive hosts in the same frame—dancing together, interacting, and competing in real-time—feeling more like an idol variety show that never goes off air. With this episode, we’re starting a new series where the three of us talk through internet phenomena we’ve all been noticing. For our first try, we’re diving into why group streaming has taken off so quickly. We look at how hosts are trained and managed, why viewers keep tipping and voting, and how platform rules shape these behaviors. We also unpack the similarities between group streaming and Japanese and Korean idol survival shows, and how “idol-training” style fan relationships are amplified inside livestreams. Through the lens of group streaming, we explore how intimacy and companionship are being redefined in an era of economic pressure and attention-driven platforms. * 00:02:31 First time with Group Streaming: Viewing an Emerging Online Culture as Spectacle * 00:07:53 What Makes Group Streaming So Addictive: Performance Aesthetics and Built-In Competition * 00:13:22 From Cute and Bubbly to Bold and Sexy: Fulfilling Audience Fantasies and Projections * 00:16:47 The Invisible Hands Behind the Scenes: Producers, Control, and Power Dynamics * 00:19:00 From Idol Survival Shows to Group Streaming: A Step Down in Taste or an Upgrade in Interaction * 00:26:30 Group Streaming and the Idol Industry: How It Differs from K-Pop and J-Pop * 00:31:57 How Group Streaming Strips Away the Last Layer of Idol-Making Illusions * 00:39:04 The Soft-Porn Undertones of Group Streaming and the “Savior” Narrative * 00:45:32 From Subculture to the Mainstream: How Group Streaming Is Becoming Part of the Entertainment Industry 【我们是谁 Who We Are】 新新人类是一档由几个与互联网一起长大的新生代科技记者主持的播客,致力于站在中美交汇点上,解读全球科技潮流与人文的交织。 【支持我们 Please Support Us】 如果喜欢这期节目并愿意支持我们: * 海外用户:patreon.com/c/pixelperfect_xxrl * 海内用户:afdian.com/a/pixelperfectpod * 商务合作邮箱:[email protected] If you like our show and want to support us, please consider the following: * Those Abroad: patreon.com/c/pixelperfect_xxrl * Those in China: afdian.com/a/pixelperfectpod * Business Inquiries Email: [email protected]

Dreamed at Burning Man only to wake up in SF

Pixel Perfect

Hi everyone, this is Yiwen reporting back from Burning Man. The day I returned from Black Rock City, I wrote in our Pixel Perfect group chat: “Friends, I regret to report that this may actually be the best week of my life.” In mainstream narratives, Burning Man — held every late August in Nevada’s desert — is often seen as an elitist playground for libertarianists. I used to think the same, especially because of its deep cultural and spiritual ties with Silicon Valley. And if you had told me last year that I’d spend eight days in the desert without showering, I would never have believed you. Yet over that week, I cried my eyes out, laughed until my stomach hurt, and stood before burning flames that made my soul tremble. In the middle of storms and rain, I also felt the most simple, genuine, and beautiful forms of human connection. All of this completely changed my view of Burning Man. But alongside the magic and spirituality of Black Rock City, we can’t avoid talking about how this countercultural gathering — rooted in hippie ideals — has evolved as it’s become more mainstream and modernized. In this episode, we explore the idea of “vacation” under capitalism and the economic cost of creating utopias. Anrui also shares her experience living in a temporary community during Zuzalu, which sparked our discussion on intentional community building. Why do these social experiments always have an expiration date? And in a controlled environment, can the kindness people show each other actually be carried back into the real world? * 00:01:37 — What is the Burning Man experience really like? * 00:08:43 — From desert rainstorms to spiritual resonance * 00:11:36 — The spiritual core of Burning Man: The Ten Principles * 00:26:11 — In the desert, dissolving identity markers * 00:33:46 — The cost of utopia: The economic reality behind creating a “pure” social experience * 00:36:21 — Montenegro, Zuzalu, and the rise of temporary cities * 00:39:42 — How Silicon Valley elites form unique connections at Burning Man * 00:56:31 — Why can we experience kindness in controlled environments, yet struggle to carry it back into real life? * 马修:一个网瘾晚期的全职养猫人 * 杜安蕤:一个想当裁缝的科技/文化撰稿人 * 一闻:一个对地铁比手机更上瘾的记者 【支持我们 Please Support Us】 如果喜欢这期节目并愿意支持我们: * 海外用户:patreon.com/c/pixelperfect_xxrl * 海内用户:afdian.com/a/pixelperfectpod * 商务合作邮箱:[email protected] If you like our show and want to support us, please consider the following: * Those Abroad: patreon.com/c/pixelperfect_xxrl * Those in China: afdian.com/a/pixelperfectpod * Business Inquiries Email: [email protected]
