After the Shang dynasty was overthrown, King Wu of Zhou faced an urgent dilemma: how should the defeated Shang people be treated? His advisor, Jiang Ziya, proposed a ruthless solution. He cited an old saying: "If you love someone, you even love the crows on their roof; if you hate someone, you come to hate even their fences and walls." By this logic, he argued, every remnant of the enemy should be completely wiped out to forestall future threats. King Wu, however, hesitated. Such a course, he felt, was far too harsh. Then another statesman stepped forward — the Duke of Zhou — offering a very different perspective. He advised that the Shang people should be allowed to return to their homes and resume farming their land. A ruler, he said, should not be biased toward old allies or personal connections, but instead govern with benevolence so as to win the hearts of all under heaven. King Wu reflected on this advice and was struck by sudden clarity. Delighted by its humanity, he embraced the approach, convinced it would bring lasting stability to the realm. In the end, the policy of leniency proved its worth. The people gradually and willingly submitted to Zhou rule, the land swiftly stabilized, and as peace took root, the new dynasty grew ever stronger. 英语里类似的表达是 "love me, love my dog"。 The closest English equivalent is "love me, love my dog."
