The trigger for Sir Keir's decision to go was Andy Burnham's victory in a by-election. The hitherto mayor of Greater Manchester is a Labour Party favourite who will stand for party leader in mid-July. Sir Keir's time in office was plagued by broken promises and a series of U-turns, often forced by militant backbench MPs. His judgment was also questioned, as advisers and ministers, including his deputy, were forced to resign for inappropriate behaviour. Following disastrous local elections for Labour, seven ministers quit after falling out with Sir Keir. After Sir Keir announced his departure the European Union postponed a summit with Britain that had only recently been set for July 22nd. Marco Rubio, the American secretary of state, said no country would be allowed to charge fees for vessels traversing the strait. An increasing number of ships have been passing through it. Oil prices have fallen back to pre-war levels. The earthquakes struck during a national holiday, so many residents were at home and not at work. Donald Trump and Masoud Pezeshkian, Iran's president, signed the document separately. The Strait of Hormuz will be reopened to shipping as peace talks begin that aim for a final deal in 60 days. A $300bn reconstruction fund for Iran is one sticking-point. It was unclear what this would entail, but Mr Trump said America would not contribute. America may lift sanctions on Iran, however, depending on negotiations about its nuclear programme. Earlier, Mr Trump noted that the agreement was only a memorandum of understanding, and "if they don't behave, we'll go right back to dropping bombs". Back home, Republicans expressed dismay at the deal. The draft agreement also calls for an end to the fighting in Lebanon, though there was some debate as to what that means. Mike Huckabee, America's ambassador in Jerusalem, said it did not refer to Hizbullah, which continues to fire missiles into Israel. And Israeli and American officials suggested it did not entail Israel pulling out from southern Lebanon, where it has been fighting Iran's proxy militia. Lacking the ability to distinguish between citizen and non-citizen users, Anthropic suspended access to Fable everywhere, even internally. Elon Musk's personal wealth has jumped to $1.3trn according to Bloomberg. Even if that was reduced by $1trn he would still be the world's richest person. Mr Trump warned that Iran would have to "pay the price" for taking too long to negotiate a peace deal; Pete Hegseth, America's defence secretary, said "we'll negotiate with bombs". Before that, Israel bombed Iran for the first time since April. Iran had triggered the Israeli response by firing missiles and drones at northern Israel. This came after Labour suffered a heavy defeat in elections in Scotland and Wales and council elections in England, which suggested that the populist-right Reform UK is on course to be the biggest party at a general election. One of the ministers who resigned, Wes Streeting, the health secretary, said it was clear Sir Keir would not lead Labour into that next election. In those elections Labour lost 1,500 councillors in England and Reform gained a similar number. The Greens cut into Labour's heartlands in inner London. The Conservatives lost nearly 600 councillors overall, but won back Westminster council from Labour. Labour lost control of the parliament in Wales for the first time since devolution in 1999 as Plaid Cymru, the Welsh nationalists, surged to victory. In Scotland the Nationalists won another term in the devolved parliament but fell short of a majority. At least three ships came under fire; one was reportedly heavily damaged by an Iranian gunboat. Hizbullah, Iran's proxy militia that has been the target of Israeli attacks in Lebanon, suggested the success of the truce depended on Israel halting all hostilities. Hawks within Israel criticised the ceasefire. The Iranian-backed militia has made thinly veiled threats of a coup against the Lebanese government should it try.
