开头引用了托尔金最著名的讲演之一《论童话》: FAERIE is a perilous land, and in it are pitfalls for the unwary and dungeons for the overbold… The realm of fairy-story is wide and deep and high and filled with many things: all manner of beasts and birds are found there; shoreless seas and stars uncounted; beauty that is an enchantment, and an ever-present peril; both joy and sorrow as sharp as swords. In that realm a man may, perhaps, count himself fortunate to have wandered, but its very richness and strangeness tie the tongue of a traveller who would report them. And while he is there it is dangerous for him to ask too many questions, lest the gates should be shut and the keys be lost. The Last Ship The oars were stayed. They turned aside: ‘Do you hear the call, Earth-maiden? Firiel! Firiel!’ they cried. ‘Our ship is not full-laden. One more only we may bear. Come! For your days are speeding. Come! Earth-maiden elven-fair, Our last call heeding.’ Firiel looked from the river-bank, One step daring; Then deep in clay her feet sank, And she halted staring. Slowly the elven-ship went by Whispering through the water: ‘I cannot come!’ they heard her cry. ‘I was born Earth’s daughter!’ Another time he took them to the other side (or as near as he dared), and that was a still longer and more exciting journey, the most marvellous of all Roverandom’s travels, as he realized later, when he was grown to be an older and a wiser dog. It would take the whole of another story, at least , to tell you of all their adventures in Uncharted Waters and of their glimpses of lands unknown to geography, before they passed the Shadowy Seas and reached the great Bay of Fairyland (as we call it) beyond the Magic Isles; and saw far off in the last West the Mountains of Elvenhome and the light of Faery upon the waves. Roverandom thought he caught a glimpse of the city of the Elves on the green hill beneath the Mountains, a glint of white far away; but Uin dived again so suddenly that he could not be sure. If he was right, he is one of the very few creatures, on two legs or four, who can walk about our own lands and say they have glimpsed that other land, however far away.

Then Yavanna spoke, and though she was thespouse of Aule she leaned rather to Ulmo. 'My lord Aule errs,' she said, 'inthat he speaks of Finwe and Miriel as being free in heart and thought from theShadow, as if that proved that naught that befell them could come from theShadow or from the marring of Arda. But even as the Children are not as we (whocame from beyond Arda wholly and in all our being) but are both spirit andbody, and that body is of Arda and by Arda was nourished: so the Shadow workethnot only upon spirits, but has marred the very hron of Arda, and allMiddle-earth is perverted by the evil of Melkor, who has wrought in it asmightily as any one among us here. Therefore none of those who awoke inMiddle-earth, and there dwelt before they came hither, have come here wholly free. The failing of the strength of the body of Miriel may then be ascribed, withsome reason, to the evil of Arda Marred, and her death be a thing unnatural. (Morgoth's Ring,P241) For Arda Unmarred hath two aspects orsenses. The first is the Unmarred that they discern in the Marred, if theireyes are not dimmed, and yearn for, as we yearn for the Will of Eru: this isthe ground upon which Hope is built. The second is the Unmarred that shall be:that is, to speak according to Time in which they have their being, the ArdaHealed, which shall be greater and more fair than the first, because of theMarring: this is the Hope that sustaineth. It cometh not only from the yearningfor the Will of Iluvatar the Begetter (which by itself may lead those withinTime to no more than regret), but also from trust in Eru the Lord everlasting, that he is good, and that his works shall all end in good. This the Marrer hathdenied, and in this denial is the root of evil, and its end is in despair. (Morgoth's Ring,P245)

The Voyage of Earendel the Evening Star Éarendel sprang up from the Ocean’s cup In the gloom of the mid-world’s rim; From the door of Night as a ray of light Leapt over the twilight brim, And launching his bark like a silver spark From the golden-fading sand; Down the sunlit breath of Day’s fiery Death He sped from Westerland. The Lonely Isle O glimmering island set sea-giirdled and alone - A gleam of white rock through a sunny haze ; O all ye hoary caverns ringing with the moan Of long green waters in the southern bays ; Ye murmurous never-ceasing voices of the tide ; Ye plumèd foams wherein the shore and spirits ride ; Ye white birds flying from the whispering coast And wailing conclaves of the silver shore, Sea-voiced, sea-wingèd, lamentable host Who cry about unharboured beaches evermore, Who sadly whistling skim these waters grey And wheel about my lonely outward way - For me for ever they forbidden marge appears A gleam of white rock over sundering seas, And thou art crowned in glory through a mist of tears, Thy shores all full of music, and thy lands of ease - Old haunts of many children robed in flowers, Until the sun pace down his arch of hours, When in the silence fairies with a wistful heart Dance to soft airs their harps and viols weave. Down the great wastes and in gloom apart I long for thee and thy fair citadel. Where echoing through the lighted elms at eve In a high inland tower there peals a bell : O lonely, sparkling isle, farewell! What are we, what am I? Poor rough creatures, whose life Is ‘depressing’ and ‘grey’, Is a heart-breaking strife With death and with shame And your polite laughter, Till – the world pass away In smoke and in flame, And some of us die, And some live on after To build it anew.
