Zijin Chen’s parents got a divorce when he was nine. And his dad remarried and had a daughter. He says he truly understands how children growing up in a single-parent family feel. According to research organization Child Trends, science supports the idea that warmth and affection expressed by parents to their children results in life-long positive outcomes for those children. Higher self-esteem, improved academic performance, better parent-child communication, and fewer psychological and behavior problems have been linked to this type of affection. On the other hand, children who do not have affectionate parents tend to have lower self esteem and to feel more alienated, hostile, aggressive, and anti-social. In 2010, researchers at Duke University Medical School found that babies with very affectionate and attentive mothers grow up to be happier, more resilient, and less anxious adults. affectionate [əˈfekʃənət] 充满爱的 Attentive [əˈtentɪv] 体贴的 The psychologists rated the mother’s affection and attention level on a five-point scale ranging from “negative” to “extravagant.” Nearly 10 percent of the mothers showed low levels of affection, 85 percent demonstrated a normal amount of affection, and about six percent showed high levels of affection. Then 30 years later, those same individuals were interviewed about their emotional health. The adults whose mothers showed “extravagant” or “caressing” affection were much less likely than the others to feel stressed and anxious. They were also less likely to report hostility and distressing social interactions. The researchers involved in this study concluded that the hormone[ˈhɔːməʊn] oxytocin [,ɔksi'təusin, -'tɔ-] may be responsible for this effect. Oxytocin is a chemical in the brain released during times when a person feels love and connection. It has been shown to help parents bond with their children, adding a sense of trust and support between them. This bond most likely helps our brain produce and use oxytocin, causing a child to feel more positive emotions. So the greatest gift parents can give their children is to love them. I highly agree that parents should take a responsibility test before they have kids cuz not everyone can be a “fit parent.”

这也让我想到了哈佛商学院教授Amy Edmondson分享过的一个TED演讲叫 《如何让陌生人组成一个团队》--How to turn a group of strangers into a team. In 2010, a massive collapse at San José Copper Mine in Chile left 33 men trapped half a mile below some of the hardest rock in the world. No drilling technology in the industry is capable of getting through rock that hard and that deep fast enough to save their lives. It's not clear if the miners are alive. And it's not even clear who's in charge. Yet, within 70 days, all 33 of these men were brought to the surface alive. First of all, they’re very humble and curious. They were able to be humble in the face of the very real challenge ahead, curious -- all of these diverse individuals, diverse expertise especially, nationality as well, were quite curious about what each other brings. And they were willing to take risks to learn fast what might work. They have overcome what we call the basic human challenge: it's hard to learn if you already know. And unfortunately, we're hardwired to think we know. And so we've got to remind ourselves to be curious about what others bring. And secondly, it's awfully hard to team if you see others as competitors. Abraham Lincoln said once, "I don't like that man very much. I must get to know him better." Think about that -- I don't like him, that means I don't know him well enough. It's extraordinary. This is the mindset we need for effective teaming. When we step back and reach out and reach across, miracles can happen.

The movie is adopted from the novel Big Fish. It tells the story about a father named Edward Bloom, who loves telling stories about his eccentric life, such as meetings with a giant man, two Korean conjoined twins who are singers, a witch with a glass eye capable of seeing the future, and a big fish that refuses to be captured. His son Will didn’t believe his stories. But when Edward fell ill, Will finally started his journey to dig into his father’s past. Will’s dad always says he was fishing on the day Will was born. But then when Will went to the hospital to visit his dad when he was very ill, the doctor finally told him the true story on the day he was born. He said actually Will’s father was very sorry to miss Will’s delivery because he was on a business trip. So he made up the fishing story for Will. Edward said: This town is more than any man could ask for. And if I were to end up here, I'd consider myself lucky. But the truth, I'm not ready to end up anywhere. Jenny asked: How are you gonna make it without your shoes? Edward replied: I suspect it would hurt, a lot. The more difficult something became, the more rewarding it was in the end. Forest Gump Suite

The first day I met Bryce Loski, I flipped. flipped在这里是突然为了某个人感到心潮澎湃的意思,所以影片翻译成了“怦然心动”。Flip for sb. The movie is based on the novel Flipped. It tells the story of two eight-graders who start to have feelings for each other despite being totally different. Probably what most people enjoyed about this movie was that the events that happened in the movie might as well have been their realities. Many people have also experienced a real crush. It was those eyes, something in those dazzling eyes. So when Juli’s dad asks her what she likes about Bryce, Juli says, “I guess it's something about his eyes or maybe his smile.” 爸爸却反问他:“And what about HIM?” Her dad says, You have to look at the whole landscape. A painting is more than the sum of it's parts. A cow by itself is just a cow. A meadow by itself is just grass, flowers. And the sun picking through the trees, is just a beam of light. But you put them all together and it can be magic. Juli’s father also teaches her how to say goodbye to something she really loves. Juli loves climbing up on a large sycamore[ˈsɪkəmɔː(r)] tree to see the view of the whole world. She can even stays there a whole day long. But then one day, the tree is cut down by a group of landscapers so a house can be built there. It’s time, Juli, it’s time. Nothing is worth risking my daughter’s safety. Later he gives Juli a painting of the tree. Sometimes you have to say goodbye, because just like Juli’s father says, “it’s time.” But the memories between you and your beloved ones will last forever. Bryce is always afraid of offending other people, so he doesn’t dare to speak out the truth. Until one day, his grandfather comes to him and says, You know, Bryce... one's character is set at an early age. I'd hate to see you swim out so far you can't swim back. It's about honesty, son. Sometimes a little discomfort in the beginning...can save a whole lot of pain down the road. Some of us get dipped in flat some in satin some in gloss. But every once in a while you find someone who's iridescent. And when you do nothing will ever compare.

The movie Hidden Figures is based on true stories. It tells the story of three brilliant African-American women, Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, working at NASA. They served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of an astronaut into orbit and guaranteeing his safe return. She works as a computer at NASA. But the majority there are white men, and they do not respect her at all, just like other white people in the society. When Johnson asks Katherine what she does at NASA, Katherine says, “we calculate the mathematics necessary to enable launch and landing for the space program.” But Johnson is shocked. He says, “That’s pretty heady stuff. They let women handle that sort of..” Hearing this, Katherine gets angry, and replies: I will have you know I was the first Negro female student at West Virginia University Graduate School. On any given day, I analyze the manometer levels for air displacement, friction, and velocity, and compute over ten thousand calculations by cosine[ˈkəʊsaɪn] , square root, and lately, Analytic Geometry[dʒiˈɒmətri] , by hand. There are twenty bright, highly capable Negro women in the West Computing Group, and we’re proud to be doing our part for the country. So, yes, they let women do some things at NASA, Mr. Johnson, and it’s not because we wear skirts. It’s because we wear glasses. She is also the first woman to attend the briefings at NASA. Her evil colleague Paul Stafford tells her that, “There is no protocol for women attending a briefing.” There’s no protocol for a man circling the Earth either, sir. Mary Jackson。 In the movie, Mary Jackson is another African American woman who has superb mathematic skills, and dreams to be an engineer. But it seems impossible for a black woman to be an engineer at NASA at that time. Mary says, “every time we have a chance to get ahead, they move the finish line.” She says to the judge at the court: Before Alan Shepard sat on top of a rocket, no other American had ever touched space. And now, he will forever be remembered as the US Navy man from New Hampshire, the first to touch the stars. And I, sir, I plan on being an engineer at NASA, but I can’t do that without taking classes at that all-white high school, and I can’t change the color of my skin. So I have no choice but to be the first. --I have no choice but to be the first. They are fighting so hard to earn the respect from men. So, going back to the question, what is feminism? According to wikipedia, feminism is a range of social movements, political movements, and ideologies that aim to define, establish, and achieve the political, economic, personal, and social equality of the sexes. So quite simply, feminism is about all genders having equal rights and opportunities, but not about commanding women or men to do certain things. Do you agree? Share your opinions with us.

The movie is a biographical drama film, based on the book The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game by Michael Lewis. The main character is Michael Oher, who is now a football star at the National Football League. He was an African-American homeless, and a white family adopted him. Thanks to the family, they boy finds love, the possibility to study and the great opportunity to start his football career. It was Leigh Anne who first found Michael picking up leftover food from other students. One night, she saw Michael walking alone on the road in the rain, and shivering without adequate clothing. When she learned that he planed to spend the night outside the closed school gym, she offered to let him sleep on the couch in their home. Leigh Anne treats Michael like her own son. Unlike Michael’s teachers who only keep complaining that he knows nothing, Leigh Anne kept observing him and found that he has a strong protective instinct, and later guided him to use his advantage to play football. Leigh Anne: Look, here's the deal, I don't need y'all to approve my choices alright, but I do ask that you respect them. You have no idea what this boy has been through and if this becomes some running diatribe, I can find overpriced salad a lot closer to home. Michael says, Courage is a hard thing to figure. You can have courage based on a dumb idea or mistake, but you're not supposed to question adults, or your coach or your teacher, because they make the rules. Maybe they know best, but maybe they don't. It all depends on who you are, where you come from. Should you always do what others tell you to do? Sometimes you might not even know why you're doing something. I mean any fool can have courage. But honor, that's the real reason for you either do something or you don't. It's who you are and maybe who you want to be...You should hope for courage and try for honor. 就像原著里说: “He was ignorant, but a lot of people mistook ignorance for stupidity, and knowingness for intelligence.”

Those were the years when the icecaps melted due to the greenhouse gases and the oceans had risen and drowned so many cities along all the shorelines of the world. Amsterdam, Venice, New York forever lost. Millions of people were displaced. Climate became chaotic. Hundreds of millions of people starved in poorer countries. Elsewhere a high degree of prosperity survived when most governments in the developed world introduced legal sanctions to license pregnancies. Which was why robots, who were never hungry and did not consume resources beyond those of their first manufacture were so essential an economic link in the chain mail society. One of the robot-producing companies builds David, an artificial kid which is the first to have real feelings, and can run a programming code of love. When their real son returns home after a cure is discovered, David’s life changes dramatically. David is dumped. Then he starts to try so hard to find ways to become a “real” person, hoping to regain the love of his human mom. David always loves his human mom. But does his mom love him? Sadly, no, she doesn’t. Just like what the Lover Robot Gigolo Joe says, “She loves what you do for her, as my customers love what it is I do for them. But she does not love you David, she cannot love you. You are neither flesh, nor blood. You are not a dog, a cat, or a canary.” Dear Mommy, I‘m your little boy, and so is Martin, but not Teddy. But when David is caught in a “flesh fair” held by humans and in great danger, Teddy insists on asking other people to help find David, though Teddy himself may be killed. Teddy even had kept Monica’s hair that was chopped off by David for 2000 years, cuz he genuinely believes with the hair, he can also become a real person and gain the love of Monica. It isn't just a question of creating a robot that can love. Isn't the real conundrum [kəˈnʌndrəm], can you get a human to love them back? So she asks, if a robot could genuinely love a person what responsibility does that person hold toward the robot in return? It's a moral question, isn't it? “If you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world.”

It takes places in one of the cruelest and most shameful moments of human history, the Holocaust. [ˈhoʊləkɔːst大屠杀 ] A young boy named Bruno lives in Berlin, in Nazi Germany. His father is promoted, and relocates their family to Poland. Living without neighbors, Bruno becomes lonely and bored. One day, he spots people working on what he thinks is a farm in the distance – actually it is a concentration camp (集中营). He sneaks into the woods, arriving at a wire fence surrounding the camp. There, he befriends a Jewish boy named Shmuel. In the end, tragically, both of them have died. The film ends by showing the closed door of the silent gas chamber, indicating that all prisoners, including Bruno and Shmuel, are dead. The movie is based on the novel of the same name published in 2006. In the book version, we see how Shmuel and Bruno were born on the exact same day. And yet their lives are completely different. How ironic. “The people I see from my window. In the huts, in the distance. They're all dressed the same.” Ah, those people...well, they're not people at all, Bruno. Bruno once asked Shmuel, “Why do you wear pajamas all day?” Shmuel: The soldiers. They took all our clothes away. Bruno: My dad's a soldier, but not the sort that takes people's clothes away. ” We're not supposed to be friends, you and me. We're meant to be enemies. Did you know that? But before Bruno knows he needs to leave the town with his family, he sneaks out again to find Shmuel, and holds Shumel’s tiny hand in his tightly and says, "You're my best friend, Shmuel. My best friend for life.” …… And then the room went very dark and somehow, despite the chaos that followed, Bruno found that he was still holding Shmuel's hand in his own and nothing in the world would have persuaded him to let it go. “Only the victims and survivors can truly comprehend the awfulness of that time and place; the rest of us live on the other side of the fence, staring through from our own comfortable place, trying in our own clumsy ways to make sense of it all.” In war-torn regions like Syria, we see millions of people fighting for the very freedoms we all take for granted. We may not be aware of the other person’s suffering until we become the other person. Complete equality might be impossible to achieve, but we can be more compassionate towards people who are suffering. An odd discovery beyond the trees The boy’s plans, from night to day

Ryan Tedder recalled the first time he decided to go into isolation was when he learned that his friend whom he shared pizza with and spent an entire night with, tested positive for COVID-19. His friend texted him from the hospital about his condition. "He's like, 'Mate, I'm so sorry but you need to go straight to a doctor, you need to get tested. I have coronavirus and it sucks. I'm in the hospital.'" When Tedder learned about his friend’s condition, he immediately called his doctor and was told not to go home to his wife and kids but head straight to his studio. "And then on the third day, I snapped and I was like, you know what, screw this, let's do live concerts every night for free, let's do a cooking show. I'm going to start quarantine cuisining every night. I love to cook and let's connect with the rest of the world." We were in the final week of our fifth album deadline when a global pandemic was declared by the WHO...With only two songs left to finish, one of them happened to be ‘Better Days.’ We write about real experiences and events that happen to us — this is what happens when you write a song during a crisis.” The song’s official music video is also very warmhearted. One Republic has asked their fans around the world to send them their social distancing and self-quarantining videos. I know that there'll be better days that sunshine about to come my way May we never ever shed another tear for today Cause' I know that there'll be better days
