The Art of War

Twenty-Five Hundred years ago, Sun Tzu wrote this classic book of military strategy based on Chinese warfare and military thought. Since that time, all levels of military have used the teaching on Sun Tzu to warfare and civilization have adapted these teachings for use in politics, business and everyday life. But do you know that the greatest military book was written by a pacifist? In this episode, I would like to share what I've learned from The Art of War by Sun Tzu. - Pitch Perfect

英文里的Pitch,除了是词典里查得到的音乐术语之外,更常用也更加非正式的意思,是 “to attempt to sell or win approval for something or someone by advertising, promotion”,中文可以翻译为“安利”。 Pitch Perfect by BillMcgowan, an Emmy Award-winning journalist and media coach is about saying the right thing the right way. It is an essential skill for everyone, from sealing a deal to getting a promotion. The book walk through 7 principles, which will help you to pitch perfect. I love the statement at the end of the book: Perfect doesn't mean mistake free. It should be real, casual, warm and enthusiastic. So for me, the pitching upskilling is a continuous journey, but the core is to keep the conversation genuine and not only about me. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/gou-xiong-you-hua-shuo/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Head Strong

Head Strong by Dave Asprey listed all the tips you need to know for a stronger brain. You can find all the tips and tricks from his previous book: Bulletproof Diet, and his website. Keep away from mold, stay in keto, take bulletproof diet and try some biohacking tips with your workout, sleep, and supplement. Learned most of his tips from Tim Ferriss' podcast and other channels, It's not a life-changing book, but always good to know some tips to improve your productivity. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/gou-xiong-you-hua-shuo/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

- Keep Going

Keep Going by Austin Kleon is a small book with big wistom. There're 10 principles in the book, which are all the things he learned during his writing and drawing journey. Those principles, such as disconnect from the world to connect with yourself, are so simple to understand, but not easy to practice. Anyone who has a few years of creative experience, will learn that the creative life is not a linear journey to a finish line, it’s a loop—so find a daily routine, because today is the only day that matters. The book is full of drawings and sketch from the author, which make it so easy to read. There are maybe too many quotes in the book, but from my perspective, I quite like it. The most valuable tip I've learned from the book, is to respect time. Don't pay your attention on how to be rich at your thirties, but try to learn how to be still passionate about life and creativity at your eighties. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/gou-xiong-you-hua-shuo/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

The Third Door

Finished the book: The Third Door. It's a young man's journey to reach out the most successful people of this planet for advice and help. Be denied countless times, and also succeeded many. A great story about a quest, also shows some great insights from those people. The things could be better of the book is the monotonic perspective and cliche interview. Besides that, I really enjoyed the part of how Alex managed to get the interviews, that was really interesting. And his storytelling skill still not as sharp as other great authors, but he's fantastic anyway: talked to so many successful people and wrote his first book in his 20's, wasn't that awesome? Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/gou-xiong-you-hua-shuo/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

323期 / 读书·如何优雅地说我TM不在乎 - The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck

A book written by a dating coach can help you find out life's meaning? It sounds like bullshit, or maybe not. The fact is, a dating coach wrote a New York Times best selling non-dating theme book, so it probably got something. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck by Mark Manson is a book with easily understandable language, meaningful stories, and deep value for life. You may find the first few chapters are too hippie to take it seriously, but then, you will immerse into the stories and start to think your own life, value, family, friendship and other things. Actually, the book is about to give a fuck on something. But first, you are going to find what are the things you want and should give a fuck, and it depends on your own value, which is different from other people. I love the story about two former rock n' roll band members, Dave Mustaine, and Pete Best. Their different value causes their feeling about life so different from each other, though their experience was quite similar: been kicked out by their bands, Metallica and the Beatles. If I need to use one sentence to describe the book for you, I gonna say, 'life is too short to spend on the things you don't give a fuck.' Find your value, give a fuck on them, and live. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/gou-xiong-you-hua-shuo/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Man's Search for Meaning

Since Auschwitz we know what man is capable of. And since Hiroshima we know what is at stake. Man's Search for Meaning by Victor E. Frankl is a great book about psychology, the value of life, and of course, the meaning of life. Victor was the survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp. He lost all the things and people he loved but learned one thing. Everything can be taken from a man but not the last of the human freedoms: to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way. The first part of the book reveals the cruel of the camp, but also the greatness of humanity, and the second part book focuses on the psychological research of Victor. After been saved from the camp, he founded his own theory: logotherapy. Recommend this book to you if you are wondering the meaning and the goal of your life. You can skip the psychological part if you are not a fan about the subject, but I'm sure you will definitely get inspiration and motivation from his story about the concentration camp. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/gou-xiong-you-hua-shuo/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Shoe Dog

Shoe Dog by Phil Knight is the best memoir of a businessman I've ever read. Unlike some other memoirs which full of brag, Shoe Dog is about struggling and some life-death moments of Nike. After reading the book, you will definitely like Phil as a great human being, and also impressed by so many downs Nike experienced in its first decade. Highly recommend all entrepreneurs, businessman, businesswoman and runners to read this book. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/gou-xiong-you-hua-shuo/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Creativity Inc.

Creativity Inc. shows us how the most creative team of this planet manage their people and project, and what makes Pixar became a legendary company. The book is so good that when I listened to the audiobook, I always felt guilty that I occasionally missed some part. The content is too good to miss. The most important thing that makes Pixar extraordinary is the attitude towards failure. The founders of Pixar do all the things they can to create a safe atmosphere for making mistakes. Because they believe when you dare to fail, you are more likely to create something different. They do not just say some pretty words. For example, the whole project file of Toy Story 2 was deleted by accident, which meant 2 years hard working of a 100 man's team would be wasted. By pure luck, the file was restored from a work from home employee's computer. They didn't punish the people deleted the file after that. Actually, they didn't even try to find out who deleted the file. That's the attitude of letting the people fail and learn from it. I was touched by the part about Steve Jobs in this book. Steve created the roadmap of Pixar in the early days, and protected this company with his fierce business instinct, Pixar also makes Steve a better leader and visionary by shows him the perfect way of combine art and technology. Ed Catmull worked with Steve for more than 25 years, the Steve in this book is different from other books, which I dream to work for. One thing really makes Pixar different from other competitors, is the storytelling. It is the hardest part of making a movie, and it is an art. As a designer, I should learn the methodologies and the frameworks of working, which is the technology part, but I also need to focus on the emotion and the story, which is the art part. Art challenges technology, and technology inspires art. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/gou-xiong-you-hua-shuo/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Make Time is a great book about how to use your time and energy in a holistic level. It is not only about productivity, time management or energy management, but also about finding out what are the things you want to focus, and how to focus your limited attention, time and energy on these things. There are three things I love about this book: 1. The authors are product designer and product manager, they used The Design Thinking approach to write the whole book, and they did a great job on empathizing audiences. The problem they mentioned in the book are exactly the problems I have. 2. The book provides heaps of tips for you to focus on your highlight, which is more like a guide book for doers. It is similar to Tools of Titans by Tim Ferriss. You don't need to adopt all the methods in the book, just find a few that fit you, and that's it. 3. The language is super easy to understand, as well as the sticky-note-style images of the book. The authors of Sprint are the masters of showing concepts and theories in such an easy and funny way. There are 4 stages of Make Time framework: Highlight, Laser, Energize, and Reflect. The first step is choosing a single highlight to prioritize in your day. Next, you'll employ specific tactics to stay laser-focused on that highlight—we'll offer a menu of tricks to beat distraction in an always-connected world. Throughout the day, you'll build energy so you can stay in control of your time and attention. Finally, you'll reflect on the day with a few simple notes. I followed David Allen's GTD approach for more than 10 years since 2007, and about 2-3 years ago, I found that I might reach the peak point of my GTD workflow. It helped me to become a productive person, but it didn't help me to focus on what really matters to me. After reading Make Time, I think The 4-step Make Time approach will be the core of my time and energy managing approach for the next few years. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/gou-xiong-you-hua-shuo/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Interviewing Users

Who need to learn user interviewing skill? If your job is related to the product or service for people, you need to learn how to interview the people who use your product or service, in other words, your users. Designers, engineers, marketers, content creators...we all need to learn how to interview users and learn things from them. Interviewing Users provides many examples and case studies for you, which is great. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/gou-xiong-you-hua-shuo/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
