What you were taught doesn’t work here, and nobody even bothered to tell you. It’s just a vague, feeling of somehow failing, all the time.
Every career problem I've ever seen comes down to one thing. Storytelling. The stories we tell others, the stories we tell ourselves.

【本期精彩】
Part1
06:47 Mixing up the Chinese words for “wife” and “Mrs.” and accidentally saying “old lady” instead(去北大交换的时候,我也会为我的中文而不自信)
07:36 Encouraging students not to stay silent just because they’re afraid of making mistakes or having an accent — confidence matters most(鼓励学员不要因为怕说错或者有口音就不敢说,自信是最重要的)
10:03 As a second-language speaker, the more relaxed you are, the more freely you can use the language(作为第二语言学习者,越松弛,就越能自由地驾驭它)
13:17 If you find yourself in an environment where there’s a lot you don’t understand, it probably means you’re pushing beyond your comfort zone(当你在一个很多东西都不懂的环境里时,说明你在突破自己)
15:03 My wife left the data engineering field she knew well, went back to study, and became a counsellor(妻子离开她熟悉的数据工程领域,去重新学习,做了一名心理咨询师)
16:30 When speaking a second language, focusing less on the language itself and more on the conversation makes communication much easier(使用非母语时,抛开语言本身的束缚,专注于对话的内容,交流会更加轻松)
17:14 Growing up in my parents’ restaurant, I never thought my experience was anything special — until I watched Fresh Off the Boat(童年在父母的餐馆长大,从未想过自己拥有独一无二的经历,直到看了《初来乍到》)
20:29 Seeing my parents, who had successful careers in China, work day and night in Canada while earning close to the poverty line made me realise that hard work and income don’t always go hand in hand(当看到曾在国内事业有成的父母在加拿大日夜操劳,收入甚至接近贫困线时,我意识到努力和收入不一定成正比)
22:30 My parents’ experience taught me that the right environment can matter even more than talent and hard work — and that became one of the core ideas behind my work as a career coach(父母的经历让我意识到,合适的环境比天赋和努力更重要,这也是我做 career coach 的核心意义之一)
28:30 I played an important role in successfully launching Uber in Vancouver, but I wasn’t nearly as happy as I thought I would be(作为温哥华 Uber 成功启动的重要角色之一,我却没有想象中那么开心)
31:12 My father’s expectations didn’t really match my own career interests. It wasn’t until I started doing career coaching that I found work I truly felt was meaningful(父亲的期望与我的职业兴趣并不吻合,直到开始做求职辅导教练,我才发现这是我认为有意义的事情)
Part 2
34:36 It all started with wanting to help my wife achieve her career goals(一切的起点,是想要帮助妻子实现她的职业理想)
37:29 A very common problem is that many job seekers assume certain things should just happen naturally(一个非常普遍的问题,是不少求职者认为很多事情本该理所应当地发生)
43:12 Sometimes you have to speak first in order to be seen, instead of only speaking when you’re sure you won’t make a mistake(很多时候你要先 speak first,才有机会被看到,而不是只在确保不会犯错的时候才发言)
50:19 We are all born as natural storytellers, because stories help us to survive.(我们生来就是故事讲述者,故事帮助我们生存)
53:06 To become a good storyteller, you need to know who your audience is and how to bring them into your story(想要成为一个好的故事讲述者,要明确自己的听众是谁,如何将他们带入你的叙事)
01:02:06 At the lowest point of my career, my wife was the only person who knew what I was going through(职场最低谷时,妻子是唯一知道的人)
01:07:05 As a career coach, I want to use my own experience to show people that if someone has made it through a situation like this, you can too(作为职业教练,我想要用自己的经历告诉别人,有人在这样的情况下走出了困境,那么你也可以)
01:10:09 You need to believe in your own inner value, so you’re less likely to be shaken by what happens around you(要相信自我内在的价值,才不容易因外界的影响而摇摆)
Part3
01:20:34 It wasn’t until I started my own business that I realised how deeply absorbed I could become in my work(开始创业后,我才发现,原来我真的可以那么投入地去工作)
01:21:49 Two years ago, my wife and my father were hospitalised around the same time, and I realised I had to make a change(两年前,妻子和父亲几乎同时住院,我意识到自己必须要做出改变了)
01:29:04 After leaving my job, I started to see the things I had sacrificed for work slowly come back into my life(辞职后,发现自己曾经为工作牺牲的东西都在渐渐回来)
01:34:14 In interviews, be a little more genuine and a little less polished — keeping some of your personality actually matters(面试时多一些真诚,少一些粉饰,适当保留个性很重要)
01:41:04 A lot of people struggle with storytelling because they don’t fully understand their own value(很多时候人们发现讲故事很难,是因为他们自己都不了解自己的价值)
01:48:44 When facing the “bamboo ceiling”, invisible barriers can make it harder for Asians to build connections with a team as quickly as local colleagues, so strong, tangible problem-solving skills become even more important(面对 “bamboo ceiling”——亚裔特有的那一层隐形晋升壁垒——一些隐形障碍会让你很难像本地人一样迅速与团队建立连接,所以需要更实质的问题解决能力)
01:55:36 After going through all the highs and lows of my career, I realised my life is much bigger than my job title or position(经历了职业生涯的起起落落后,我意识到,我的人生远不是职位和头衔能定义的)
01:58:52 Because of what my father taught me, the word “entrepreneur” always felt so grand that I never thought I really qualified to call myself one(父亲的教诲,让我觉得“企业家”太高大上,大到我不认为自己能够得上这个词)
02:03:50 The value that I bring is I help Chinese professionals to be seen.(我的价值就是帮助中国人在国外职场中像他们本应得的一样被看到)
02:06:04 I once told one of my students: what you think is your weakness might actually be what makes you stand out(我曾告诉我的学员,你所认为的“短处”恰恰可能是你的特点)
Part 4
02:10:14 Even though I grew up in Canada, I still felt awkward and self-conscious early in my career because networking and small talk didn’t come naturally to me(尽管成长在加拿大,初入职场时,我依旧会因为无法很轻松地社交而感到尴尬和局促)
02:12:39 My clients are at different stages of their careers and face very different problems. The one thing they have in common is that they all want to change something about where they are, and I tailor my guidance to each person(我的学员处在不同的职业阶段,面对不同的问题,唯一的共性是他们都想对现状做出改变,而我会针对不同的情况给出指导)
02:16:31 For most of time, the biggest thing I do for my clients is help them build confidence(很多时候我最大的作用,就是为学员建立信心)
02:18:32 Ten years from now, I still hope to be someone who can influence and help other people(十年以后,我希望自己依旧是一个能够影响别人、帮助别人的人)
