It is extremely incredible that the bad way you mentioned to teach children English is really identical to what I used when I was teaching my sister English last winter holidays. And during that time, I bought some books, read to her, explain the grammars and correct her pronounciations. After that, I also asked her about several words from that book to check whether she remembered those words. Eeven worse, I required her to get a notebook to write down the words she didn't remember. Wow, that was insane. Now after listening to your podcast I get a deeper insight into why she seemed not very willing to learn English.
