Glenn Stout
Have you ever had that feeling? You're at a job you don't love, you come home to a rented apartment, and you have no idea what you're doing or where you're headed next.
Glenn Stout knows that feeling all too well. Before he became a writer, he was a construction worker, a janitor, a ticket seller at baseball games. He spent ten years as a librarian at the Boston Public Library — reading obsessively, befriending other writers, and getting up at four in the morning to write, because during the day he was out pouring concrete. He didn't publish his first book until he was 27, and he didn't become a full-time writer until his late 30s.
This week on echora, host Adella sits down with Glenn Stout, author of Young Woman and the Sea . The book tells the story of Trudy Ederle, a hard-of-hearing 19-year-old from a New York immigrant family who, in 1926, became the first woman to swim the English Channel — beating the men's record by two hours along the way. In 2024, Disney turned it into Young Woman and the Sea , known in China as 《泳者之心》.
But what really got me about this conversation wasn't how far Trudy swam or how many books Glenn has written. It's that they spent it talking about something my generation is sorely missing: patience .
Glenn says so many young people today are crushed by the pressure to succeed. Parents don't ask "Do you love it?" — they ask "How much money will you make?" But his parents never once asked him how he'd make a living. So he got to write poems, to do the things there was "no job" for, and slowly found his own way. As he puts it: "Be a little patient. Not everyone gets to be super successful at 25. I didn't publish until 27, didn't write full-time until my late 30s. Sometimes the winter is long — but spring is coming."
Trudy's story isn't some "work hard and you'll make it" pep talk either. She didn't swim the Channel to become a hero, or even to prove what women could do. She did it to prove something to herself — and to her sister Meg, the person she trusted most. To her, the water wasn't a thing to be conquered; it was a companion. In an era when everyone believed women simply couldn't, she quietly did the thing, and then quietly got on with her life. She didn't turn herself into a label. She became a whole person.
Towards the end, the conversation drifted to AI. If AI can write books and translate and do everything, what's left for us? Glenn said something I've been turning over ever since: "Writing is an act of learning. If you use AI to jump past that process, you're not really learning anything."
This episode is best listened to on your commute, before bed, or on one of those days when you feel like you're falling behind. You're not behind. You might just not have found your water yet.
