34:The Great Gatsby — The Grand Illusion
(Introduction)
Part 1: The Symbol of the Green Light
Nick Carraway, the narrator, moved to Long Island and became neighbors with a mysterious millionaire named Jay Gatsby. Every night, Gatsby would stand alone on his lawn, stretching his arms toward a tiny green light across the bay. That light marked the end of a dock belonging to Daisy Buchanan, the woman he had loved five years ago. To Gatsby, the green light was not just a signal; it was the symbol of his "incorruptible dream." He believed that if he became rich enough, he could erase the past five years and start over with Daisy as if nothing had changed.
Part 2: The Illusion of the Jazz Age
Gatsby’s mansion was a palace of constant celebration. Every weekend, hundreds of people came to his enormous parties to drink his champagne and dance. Most guests didn't even know Gatsby; they only traded rumors about his mysterious past. In reality, Gatsby was born poor. He had spent years building a fortune through illegal means, all to impress Daisy. He wanted to show her that he was no longer the penniless soldier she had once known. He thought his "new money" could finally bridge the gap between him and Daisy’s "old money" world.
Part 3: The Collision of Two Worlds
On a burning hot summer day, the tension finally exploded. In a hotel room in New York, Gatsby confronted Daisy’s husband, Tom. He demanded that Daisy admit she had never loved Tom. But Daisy could not do it; she was addicted to the safety and status that Tom’s family wealth provided. On the drive back, a tragic accident occurred: Daisy, driving Gatsby’s car, accidentally hit and killed Tom's mistress. Gatsby took the blame to protect Daisy. He spent the whole night watching her house from the shadows, while she and Tom reconciled inside over a cold supper. The dream was dead, but Gatsby was still guarding it.
Part 4: The Final Disillusionment
A few days later, Gatsby was murdered in his pool by a man who wrongly believed Gatsby was the killer. At his funeral, the hundreds of people who had attended his parties were nowhere to be found. Daisy and Tom simply moved away, leaving their mess behind. Nick realized they were "careless people" who used their money to hide from their mistakes. As Nick looked at the bay for the last time, he understood Gatsby's tragedy. We are all like Gatsby: we row our boats against the current, desperately trying to reach a past that is forever moving away from us.
(Key Points & Logic)
2. The Corruption of the Dream
4. The Metaphor of Rowing
