shownotes in English:
At this year's Venice Film Festival, Japanese cinema has garnered less attention than in previous years. Fortunately, the presence of two voice actors from the Out of competition Scarlet —Mana Ashida and Masaki Okada—reuniting in the city by the lagoon has significantly boosted Japanese cinema's visibility at this year's event, thanks to the high anticipation surrounding this star-studded animated film. On the very night of the film's premiere, the shuttle boat I boarded was flooded with Japanese journalists, their conversations buzzing with excitement about this new release.
For seasoned anime enthusiasts, director Mamoru Hosoda is a household name. His film The Girl Who Leapt Through Time earned an impressive 8.6 rating from over 420,000 viewers, and his recent works have consistently graced international film festivals like San Sebastián and Cannes. He stands as one of the few contemporary Japanese animators who seamlessly blends local aesthetic sensibilities with a universal artistic voice.
In his latest work, Scarlet, Hosoda reimagines Shakespeare's classic Hamlet, focusing on its revenge motif. He boldly transforms the protagonist from a prince into a princess, surrounding her with a series of mystical and visually stunning settings. This fusion presents a collision of cultural symbols from past and future.
Just before the world premiere of Scarlet, I had a conversation with Director Mamoru Hosoda about the film's narrative of “female vengeance” and his preferred animation techniques this time. He shared his hope to initiate a dialogue with young people through this film. Immediately after our formal interview concluded, he put this into action by personally presenting me with a precious gift. What exactly he gave me will be revealed in the program.
To enhance your understanding of our conversation, this podcast episode features not only the director's original audio but also my film review and translations of his responses. We've made every effort to bridge the gap created by language differences. This marks my first independently conducted interview, coordinated directly with the local foreign PR team on-site. It holds extraordinary significance for me, and I hope you enjoy listening.
0:58 Scarlet resonated with me on three levels
1:33 The exhilaration of the action sequences
3:00 The freshness of the perspectives
4:57 The grandeur of the themes
7:55 Introduction in interview format
9:10 Director Mamoru Hosoda's original greeting to Chinese fans
10:21 Question 1: Original response to “How did the traditional play ‘Hamlet’ influence the film? Why did you replace the protagonist with a princess?”
11:19 Translation of Question 1 response
13:34 Question 2: Original response to “What animation techniques were used this time? What drew you to them?”
14:27 Translation of Answer to Question 2
16:12 Question 3: “When Scarlett faces crucial decisions, does she possess independent agency and irreplaceable initiative? Or is she swayed by external circumstances or others?” Original Audio Response
17:30 Translation of Answer to Question 3
19:43 Director Mamoru Hosoda: Your questions are all fascinating! Let's definitely continue this conversation when we have the chance!
20:12 Impressions of Director Mamoru Hosoda
20:35 What does that most precious gift symbolize?
23:50 Looking forward to seeing it again on the big screen in mainland China!
