I guess it’s partly because we have such a huge population, and it takes time to really get to know someone. So people fall back on “labeling” others as a shortcut—it’s efficient(though obviously comes with a lot of drawbacks). When it comes to regional identity, there are always stereotypes, and sometimes not-so-nuanced discrimination. Btw, we actually joke about “Henan”—not “Hunan”—stealing manhole covers! Lol.

And actually, some of these discriminatory views are partially based on certain events. For example, there was a time when some people from Henan were accused of stealing manhole covers to sell for profit. Maybe they did it out of desperation, due to poverty. So yes, these stereotypes often stem from real incidents—but they aren’t equal or fair, in my opinions. That kind of generalization ignores the diversity within any region or community, and it often overlooks the structural conditions—like poverty or lack of opportunity—that lead to those actions in the first place.
