29. Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea

Minchester

Hello! Azure and I had a follow-up discussion about Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea (you can find the previous episodes on Azure’s literature podcast, We provided our answers to the questions posed by the audience, incl. the Big Question: why did Jane Eyre go back to the side of Mr. Rochester? WHY?! We also argued that the famous manifesto of gender equality is more of a beguiling display than a heart-felt and effective confession of self-worth and independence. We delved into Bluebeard, the literary archetype of many stories. We read Wide Sargasso Sea, examining how Jean Rhys reversed the narrative of the so-called madwoman in the attic. Finally, we offered our theory on why and how Jane Eyre continues to fascinate generations of readers and what role it plays in imagining a form of pure Britishness. Hope you enjoy this episode! Let us know what you think! Music Where The Wild Roses Grow by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and Kylie Minogue

In My Skin

Minchester

Spoiler Alert! In My Skin is a coming-of-age story about a Welsh girl Bethan as she explores the mirth and misery of an unusual girlhood - her mother has bipolar disorder and her dad is an abusive alcoholic. This show stole my heart with its second season. I talk about its creator Kayleigh Lleweylln, how her talent reminds me of Phoebe Waller-bridge, and how she pulls heart and soul into this show which is based on her upbringing. I was crying my eyes out watching the tragedy unfolding for Bathan, but also was so touched by how she manages to fight back and build her own life. Its leading actor Gabrielle Creevy is going to have her time in the near future - mark my words! And cannot wait for Kayleigh's future works. Ich bin dein Mensch

Minchester

The past was a foreign country and we date robots now. I am joined by Cherry and Lassie from Rotten Cherry in discussing the German film I Am Your Man, starring Dan Stevens and Maren Eggert. Enjoying Dan’s British-accented German, I was deeply enchanted by this story between a reluctant woman and her robot friend, programmed according to her romantic taste. It is light-hearted with comical details as well as philosophical reflection. Tenderly, it asks questions about what to do when facing the ending of a relationship, and human beings’ exploration of their desires and fears in a near future. 02:00 Rotten Cherry (一车烂话) is a podcast in Mandarin produced by the three of us. Twice on the Editor’s Pick, it now has over 5000 followers! 05:16 Introduction of Ich bin dein Mensch / I Am Your Man 08:27 A couple who don’t like each other during arranged meetings end up falling for each other is a familiar trope for many Japanese/Korean soap operas, but I Am Your Man is a German film, what’s German about this story? 10:58 Alma, an independent and professional woman specializing in language research, makes an attractive protagonist 12:12 Comic performances by Dan Stevens 15:24 What can a human man learn from his robot counterpart? 21:31 To Lassie, this film is more tragedy than comedy: When Alma undergoes pressure from family and society, a perfect robot enters her life only to be recalled later, what should she do then? 28:26 I Am Your Man reminds Lassie of the film Her 33:26 Cherry thinks robot Tom is a dessert with too much sugar 36:56 The idea of having a perfect partner is a luxury 41:06 Will the three of us date Tom? 47:29 On the ending 59:28 After Yang, a film about robot carers, is a film to watch 60:22 Unorthodox, Maria Schrader’s TV show on a young woman from an ultra-orthodox community, is highly recommended Reference 电影 Ich bin dein Mensch / I Am Your Man (2021) 电影 Her (2013) 小说《蒙马特遗书》,邱妙津 电影 After Yang (2021) 电视剧 Unorthodox (2020) Music I’m Your Man by Leonard Cohen

When Breath Becomes Air

Minchester

The privilege of direct experience had led me away from literary and academic work, yet now I felt that to understand my own direct experiences, I would have to translate them back into language. Hemingway described his process in similar terms: acquiring rich experiences, and retreat to cogitate and write about them. I needed words to go forward. Hello, this is Part 2 of 'Meditation on Med'. You are going to hear a quite personal reading of a great book When Breath Becomes Air. When Breath Becomes Air was written by the late neurosurgeon Dr Paul Kalanithi, who discovered he had had a late stage cancer during the last year of his residency. He wrote about why he chose to study medicine, neurosurgeon in particular; the lengthy and demanding training. He wrote about the peculiar nature of neurosurgery, an operation of the brain, which requires the patient to answer: what makes life meaningful enough to go on living. The diagnosis of lung cancer put Dr Kalanithi in a place of a patient and forced him to think about this question, and to take action to pursue what was meaningful to him at the end of his journey. Like most of the readers, it was an eye-opening experience for me to get to know some knowledge of neurosurgery, and it was heartbreaking but at the same time inspiring to read Dr Kalanithi's story. But it is Dr Kalanithi's take on writing, or literature, that touches me the most. I love when he talked about he wanted to get to the junction where medicine, morality, and literature intersect, which is profound for me, who recently changed career path. I love when he quoted Hemingway to highlight the need of 'translating experience to words'. It is literature, or writing, or things that are not science-bound, that makes this book happen. It has encouraged me to think about what role literature can play in my life - a companion that guides and consoles me, a tool that helps me to cogitate and to understand. So, be aware this is not your usual book review; rather, it's a meditation of jobs, calling or not, and the meaning of life, whatever elusive form it takes.
