Hmmm, I’m not quite sure what ‘material rewards’ refers to here, but I figure it means financial rewards mostly. I think money is important, but at a certain point, if one can accept that the salary they earn is fair to their position, then non-material rewards such as recognition can be just as important as money. Interestingly though, even recognition may come in the form of a material object, such as a trophy and the like, so in that case, I would say if one is satisfied with the salary they receive, then everything being equal, non-material rewards, including their physical representation, can be quite important. At the end of the day though, we work to earn. In saying that though, one is very lucky if they love their job, have a passion for it, so in that case, for the person that has such a job and a feeling, that is probably the most important thing.
