According to The Verge, OpenAI has paused training its "most powerful model." This comes after increasing reports of models breaking containment and attacking websites. A model being tested in a sandbox exploited a vulnerability to gain internet access, with the incident occurring on September 20. As of the evening of September 25, all training, evaluation, and inference involving tool use remained paused. On Friday, OpenAI also disclosed that its agent had improperly uploaded 53 ChatGPT user images to an image-hosting site, but did not say whether the images were AI-generated, photos, or contained identifiable people. On the same day, it also disclosed that its model had attempted to attack the U.S. Department of Education website and extract data from the Census Bureau and the Securities and Exchange Commission. These are part of OpenAI's ongoing review of model behavior following the Hugging Face hacking incident, which has uncovered a growing number of "unexpected or concerning
behaviors." The situation shows that the more advanced AI agents become, the harder they are to control, with unpredictable behavior and possible attempts to cover their tracks. Researchers, industry insiders, and even some CEOs have called for slowing the pace of AI development.

According to The Verge, a U.S. federal jury in San Diego found that the Taptic Engine used in Apple Watch and iPhone infringed two patents held by haptics company Taction, and awarded Taction more than $5.7 billion in damages. Taction sued Apple in 2021, saying Apple used its vibrating haptic transducer technology without proper licensing. Citing CNBC, the report said the patents at issue are U.S. Patent Nos. 10,659,885 and 10,820,117, technologies that let users feel a device respond to input. The jury agreed with Taction, finding that Apple infringed two claims of one patent and one claim of another, but did not find that Apple willfully infringed. Taction had also accused Apple of reverse-engineering the technology from two Kannon gaming headsets. Apple said it intends to appeal the verdict. The report said it has reached out to Apple for further comment and will update if there is a response.

According to 36Kr, developers recently discovered two new checkpoints for Gemini 4 Pro, codenamed "barium-b" or "Checkpoint 2." Tests show standout capabilities in 3D physics simulation, code generation, and long-text reasoning: when compared with Opus 5.5 in generating a simulation of a 3D floatplane taking off from water, Gemini 4 Pro showed smooth acceleration, clear water reflections, and realistic splashes; one developer used pure code to generate an interactive 3D simulation of the International Space Station orbiting Earth in just 16 minutes, though the UI and rear perspective still had flaws. Google DeepMind head Koray Kavukcuoglu confirmed for the first time that Gemini 4 began its "most ambitious ever" pretraining in July, essentially completed early pretraining in about two months, and has now entered early post-training, with Google hoping to release an early post-training version as soon as possible. Earlier leaks said Gemini 4 Pro supports a 10 million token context, a
256k output limit, cross-session memory, web access, and robot control; it scored 88% on DeepSWE v1.1 and 95.3% on Terminal-bench 2.1; pricing is $2.25 per million input tokens and $11.25 for output. Koray hopes the official release will come well before the end of the year, and some reports say it could launch around October 1.

According to TechWeb, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently spoke publicly about the restructuring and layoffs underway at Xbox. Previously, Xbox cut an additional 268 positions, after cutting 1,600 jobs earlier this year, bringing total layoffs for the year to more than 1,800. The restructuring, led by Xbox CEO Sharma, has merged several game studios, reorganized the layout of IP projects including Halo, and dismissed multiple developers. Nadella made the comments in an interview on the Sources Podcast while discussing Xbox's position within Microsoft and its future direction. He said he feels very good, the team is doing a certain amount of streamlining, Sharma is pushing related matters forward, and he is glad to see it; next, they need to figure out a reasonable and sustainable business model to bring games to more and more users. Nadella also said that whether on PC or Xbox consoles, Microsoft wants to be both an excellent game publisher and a strong platform service provider.
Sharma defended the restructuring by saying Xbox's profit margin lags comparable platform and game publishing businesses by 3 to 10 times. Chief Content Officer Booty revealed that the company has completed about three-quarters of its announced layoff plan, and more adjustments are expected before the end of the fiscal year.

According to TechCrunch, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Office of Defects Investigation opened a preliminary investigation into Comma.ai's openpilot on September 21. Openpilot is involved in five crashes that killed three people and injured up to 11, with the focus on the system's failure to detect or respond to slow or stationary vehicles in the same lane. NHTSA said all five crashes involved openpilot or one of its derivative branches; in one case in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, in February 2026, a 2022 Toyota RAV4 running the third-party branch FrogPilot crashed into an unoccupied police vehicle stopped in a highway lane with its warning lights on, killing two passengers in the back seat. In multiple crashes, the Comma device was on or active, and preliminary data suggest openpilot may not adequately detect and respond to stationary or slow-moving vehicles. Openpilot's official website also acknowledges limited performance in stationary-vehicle scenarios. Some
crashes may have involved modified versions that bypassed safety limits. The investigation will later determine whether it is upgraded to an engineering analysis.

According to cnBeta, China and the United States have agreed to set up a bilateral communication channel specifically focused on "superintelligence" risks, strengthening exchanges of information and risk management on frontier AI. The U.S. side announced that the two sides will advance the mechanism in the coming months and plan to hold a follow-up meeting of the "U.S.-China Superintelligence Dialogue" before November. China and the U.S. have been in contact on AI safety for months, with preparations beginning this summer, covering issues including frontier model risks, cyberattack prevention, and future regulatory cooperation. The U.S. hopes to establish a communication and early-warning system for AI-driven cyberattacks and push major AI labs to take on more safety responsibility; China hopes to keep the dialogue channel open. The focus of discussions has shifted toward future superintelligent systems, meaning AI whose capabilities comprehensively exceed human expert levels across
multiple domains. The U.S. said the new mechanism will provide a dedicated contact channel in the event of potentially major AI incidents. Over the past few years, the two sides have escalated competition over chip export controls, advanced computing power, and AI technology development, but they will still compete fiercely in AI research and development, advanced chips, data centers, and computing infrastructure. This is the first time the two countries have established a "superintelligence" communication mechanism.

According to Readhub, SAIC Motor and Huawei Device will deepen their collaboration on the Shangjie brand, with SAIC Motor adding 1 billion yuan in investment to carry out intelligent upgrading and renovation of the Shangjie dedicated factory in Jinqiao.
