Talk about a food that you tried and didn't like. Include:
* What it was
* Why you didn't like it
* If you will try it again
The food I'd like to talk about is bullfrog, also known as 'field chicken' in some Chinese contexts, a dish I tried once but absolutely didn't enjoy.
It happened a few weeks ago when I was eating out with a close friend in downtown Guangzhou. She ordered the bullfrog and before I could even react, she’d picked a piece and put it in my bowl. I couldn't really refuse, even though I felt hesitant.
To be honest, the taste itself wasn't the problem. It actually had a texture similar to chicken and that's probably why it's called 'field chicken' in Chinese. But the issue was purely psychological: as soon as I remembered I was eating a frog, I felt it was incredibly weird.
Frogs are creatures I associate with ponds and rice fields…they’re small, slimy, green or brown little animals, not human food! No matter how much I tried to focus on the flavor, I couldn't shake off the mental image of a frog, and that made every bite feel uncomfortable. My brain just couldn't accept that this was something I should be eating.
Would I try it again? Definitely not, for me, trying bullfrog was a one-time experience. I'm pretty conservative when it comes to meat, as I prefer to stick to mainstream options like pork, chicken, beef, fish, and duck. Those are the foods I grew up with and they feel 'safe' to me.
Looking back, I think it's interesting how our perceptions of food are so deeply shaped by what we're used to. For my friend, bullfrog is a delicious dish, but for me, it's just… a frog. And no matter how much it tastes like chicken, I can't get past that.
So yeah, that’s the one food I tried and definitely won't be having again!
