Welcome to One Sip English,
the tiny show where we take one English word or phrase,
slow it down,
and sip it together
until it really stays in your mind.
Today’s phrase is:
rip off.
rip off。
You walk into a little shop on vacation.
The lights are warm.
The music is soft.
The seller is smiling.
You see a T-shirt you like.
It looks simple and nice.
You ask the price.
They say, “Eighty dollars.”
You smile on the outside.
But inside, you’re like,
“Wait… what? For this?”
If you still pay that crazy price,
you can say:
“I got ripped off.”
“我被宰了 / 我被坑了(I got ripped off)。”
“Rip off” is simple,
but very useful.
Most of the time,
it means someone takes too much money from you.
They charge way too high.
The thing is not worth the price.
You feel cheated.
So if a taxi driver takes a long, stupid route
just to make more money,
you can say:
“The taxi driver ripped us off.”
(The taxi driver ripped us off)。”
You didn’t just pay.
You got cheated on the price.
Or you go to a tourist market.
A tiny magnet costs ten dollars.
You buy it.
Then you walk three minutes,
and see the same magnet for one dollar.
You can say:
“That first shop really ripped me off.”
(That first shop really ripped me off)”
We also use a rip-off as a noun.
You look at your bill and say:
“This gym membership is such a rip-off.”
(This gym membership is such a rip-off)”
It means:
The price is crazy.
The value is low.
You feel tricked.
There is a second meaning too.
“Rip-off” can also mean a bad copy.
Imagine a movie
that feels exactly like another movie.
Same story.
Same style.
Just worse.
You can say:
“This movie is just a rip-off of Inception.”
(This movie is just a rip-off of Inception)”
Or you see a bag
that looks like a famous luxury brand,
but the quality is cheap.
You can call it:
“A cheap rip-off.”
“一个便宜山寨货(A cheap rip-off)。”
So, two main ideas to remember:
First,
第一,
money:
They ask too much.
You get cheated.
You get ripped off.
你就可以说 you got ripped off。
Second,
第二,
copy:
Something feels stolen.
It looks like another thing.
It’s a rip-off of the original.
Now compare it quickly:
“Cheat” is general.
He cheated on the exam.
He cheated on the exam.
She cheated in the game.
She cheated in the game.
“Overcharge” is formal.
The hotel overcharged us.
The hotel overcharged us.
But rip off feels emotional and real.
You can hear the pain inside it.
It’s perfect for those moments
when you think,
“Wow, they really took advantage of me.”
So next time you pay for something,
and later you think,
“This is way too much,”
you know what to say:
“I got ripped off.
“I got ripped off,
And I don’t want to be ripped off again.”
