So every single year — and I mean every year — around Chinese New Year, I get the same questions from my non-Chinese friends.

They’ll go like:

“Wait… Chinese New Year isn’t on January 1st?”

“Why is everything red?”

“And why does it feel like the entire country just… disappears for a week?”

So today, I want to share how I personally explain Chinese New Year to foreigners — in a normal conversation, over coffee, at work, or at my kids’ school.
