我们所说的现代爵士Modern Jazz，就是指Bebop和Hardbop时期为主的所谓波普爵士乐时代。而这也正是爵士音乐界非洲裔乐手受到伊斯兰信仰最大影响的时期，伊斯兰信仰也是和美国黑人民权运动紧密联系在一起的。它对波普爵士乐的形成，一直到之后美国自由爵士、先锋爵士时代发展都起着至关重要的作用。
