Dear Mr. Reynolds,
I’m afraid I have some unfortunate news. Due to being over-extended at work, I find myself unable to meet the time demands of the course.

On Mondays in particular, as the distance of the school is some way from my place of work, and as I had over-estimated my capacity for navigating rush hour, Monday has proven to be a hindrance in my study effectiveness, and as my late arrival last Monday shows, an obstacle to arriving timely to class.

I know this is highly unorthodox, but I would like to inquire as to the possibility of only attending Wednesday’s class. Friday is also posing a problem for attending the class as my superior has shifted another task my way in the interim. For homework, perhaps I could check in with one of the students regarding the areas covered in class and the homework assigned.

As I said, I know this is a highly unusual request, and my apologies for having to ask you. If you consider this unworkable, I fully understand, and in that case, I’m afraid I must discontinue the course at present. You are a splendid teacher no doubt!
