【转录2/18】【3:00-5:15】 Yeah, and the way he looked at, you know, like, when you are an actor, you act, usually you need to act with your eyes, I mean, good actors. And before, he was like an actor, he was charming, like you said, and good looking. And then after that, after he got rescued, I saw his eyes, and his eyes, oh my god, he just stared at no place, like you cannot find a focus out of his eyes. I think within like two or three days, that was a huge change for one person. Yeah, I wonder what happened to him. Must be something terrible and horrible. Yeah, can you imagine if, you know, the police who rescued him, sort of, or the police they try to contact actually fake police? Oh my gosh, it reminded me of something, you know. Have you ever watched the movie called 《孤注一掷》? No, not yet. What is it about? So, you know, the female character, Jincheng, was rescued by the police. She was so happy. She thought that she could go home safely. And it turned out, actually, it was the fake police, just like what you said. So she was sent back to the places where she was locked. That was the most terrible thing that I could ever imagine. Wow, and that actually reminded me of a piece of news that I read. Not only the police was fake, the police station was fake as well. Oh my gosh, oh my god, that sounds…. Yep, fake cops, fake station, really crazy. How come? Well, so in India, you know, sometimes people are very intimidated by the police. When the police walk into the markets, like a water market or something, some people would give them some, a little bit like a red pocket stuff. And then the leader of this gang saw that. And she, yes, the leader is a she. And at that time, she was selling stuff, vegetables or something in the market. And she saw that. She was like, wow, that's such a good way to make money. You just need to walk around and everybody pays you. Okay.

【转录4/18】【7:42-10:04】 But how come people couldn't distinguish these two police stations? They look very similar with the order, decoration and everything. And you know, in India, it's not always look so fancy in some area, right? True. So the funny part of the whole story was because they were fake, right? And they wanted people to come and pay them for “service”. So they have very good attitude, like compared to the real police. The attitude was so nice. People started to speak up words of mouth. They started to tell each other like that station had better service and the police there were nicer. So let's go there. So people, instead of the real police station, people actually prefer to go to the fake police station. Okay, that's a very good strategy, huh? And because, you know, in India, not everything, not all the service can be processed that fast. So I said they had this fake police station for eight months. And for Indian people, sometimes it could be pretty normal. Once you submit your application, you may have to wait for more than a year. So for them, they just collect the money, you know, send out the application, even help people to fill in the forms. Good service, right? And they just collect the money and do nothing. Oh, no. Okay, basically, they just need to do some office work and then smile at people and try to listen to them carefully. And that's it. And they just earn loads of money. Yep. And then do you know how they got caught? How? So they did their thing like they walked into the market to collect money, right? Just as usual. And then they walk into some booth to booth. And the owner of one of those booths felt a little bit off of the whole thing because another two policemen just collected money. So which means they're the second pack of police to collect the money. And it was not that long ago, probably like two days before or one day before, something like that. So this owner felt like angry about that.

【转录12/18】【33:48-36:03】 I see. I mean, every day I just receive a lot of friend requests in Instagram. Like their profiles look perfect, like they are rich, they are sporty. And basically you can tell that they love life and that kind of vibe. And usually I just like delete the friend request. Well, one time I got a friend request. It was so interesting. That guy tried to text me in English. Like started to ask me questions. Oh, you look so pretty. I really want to meet you. And blah blah blah and stuff like that, right? And then I'm like why your English sounds so weird? I was looking at his English. It's definitely not a native speaker. I see. And I even asked him, well, we don't have to speak English. You know, we can speak Chinese. And he was like no, I can only speak English and blah blah blah. So I screenshot that chat and send it to my friend. And we just laughed at it like for quite a while. And then my friend told me try to, you know, anti-scam him back, just have some fun. So I started to text that guy like ask him like questions and use some really weird English. Eventually he just fade out. I see. He just fade out. Okay. So he understood like you revealed the scam, right? Yeah, I think so. I mean like, just you know, if you really want to scam people, just try… Harder I shouldn't say this. But please try harder. Sometimes I feel like it's so sloppy. Oh my gosh. Yeah, so I don't know like probably we have to be more alerted. But you know, I heard a saying. Like every people will get scammed. They just need the scam that are designed for them. Yeah. The most notorious ones were always the police call. Like they're pretending to be a cop. And then like say “Oh, you committed a crime” They usually have very deep voice. He was like “You committed a crime. Now we need this and this and this.” Have you experienced that?

【转录13/18】【36:05-39:04】 Yeah, I did. But usually I just like “Okay, bye.” That's it. At one time, I was free. I had nothing to do. So when I had that call, so I started to chat with that guy. So he said, he said the same thing like “Oh, you committed a crime. And here and there. And you needed to do this and that.” And you know all those stuff. And I started to chat with him like “Oh, really? You are working in the police station too? Oh, I am too. Where are you working? I really need to check my record and stuff like that.” And that guy just hang up. I'm like, oh, come on. Yeah, he was scared. Yeah, it sometimes it happens, especially when something we don’t really know. Like all those scams we kind of can laugh about are those that we are quite familiar with. We sort of know how it works, so we wouldn’t really get scammed. But sometimes like people abroad, for example, we don’t know much about our surroundings and sometimes we don’t even know much about what’s happening within China. So sometimes, especially when, especially when you feel vulnerable about something or somewhere. It's very likely to become the easy target for those scams. I hope we can summarize some signs of scams, so we can avoid them. Do you have any tips about that? Yes. So here are a few common signs of scams that we can be aware of. The first one, contacted out of the blue by a stranger, offering unsolicited advice on investments. And then the second one, required to pay additional fees or taxes to access or withdraw money without prior knowledge.

14/18】【39:11-42:54】 And number three. Offered guaranteed returns or promise returns higher than legitimate financial institutions. And then number four, encouraged to invest more by being promised higher returns. And then pressured to do so or risk of losing all the money. Yeah, so here are a few rules how we can dodge these. First rule, if someone offers guaranteed returns or pressures you to pay fees immediately. Never share bank details with randoms. And if you are targeted just like me, if you started to key in your personal information and once you find out, freeze payments, call the police and report it globally. Yeah, basically treat scammers like expired milk. Sniff it, toss it, and warn your friends. Yeah, perfect analogy. And of course. Stay skeptical. And keep in touch with your friends and family just in case. And of course, stay safe and remember if it sounds too good to be true, it's probably just like that German guy with a sob story. So be careful guys. If they claim to be a policeman, claim to be a cop, and you ask them to give their badge number. They will give you a number and their name .When that happens, you better check with the police station. Really just call 110. And then just check the numbers. Or just find the local police station and they can check.

【转录15/18】【42:56-46:04】 They can check whether there is such a person in their system. And then you know whether that is true or not. Yeah, so guys, stay calm, stay safe. Totally. So after all the stories about scams, how can we use what we learned in our english speaking test? All right. In IELTS part 2, there's a question. Describe a time that someone didn't tell you the whole truth about something. You should say when it happened, who didn't tell you the truth, why he cheated you and explain how you felt about this experience. Can you give us an example? Of course. This happened last year when my colleague Betty became entangled in a terrifying catfishing scheme. A man named "Bruce" contacted her on Wechat, claiming to be a senior mariner employed under a decade-long government contract. He shared photos of himself and "work updates", even discussing plans to invest in a property. Bruce spun a dramatic backstory: his fiancée had supposedly died of cancer, followed by a fatal accident that killed his entire family. As a "orphaned by tragedy," he positioned himself as a lonely high-earner seeking connection. After months of daily messages, Bruce announced he was returning from an "offshore project" and sent photos of luxury goods allegedly purchased. However, Betty remained cautiously skeptical - something felt off about his inconsistent stories.

The terrifying climax came when "Bruce's sister Lucy" messaged, claiming he'd been swept overboard and needed $8,000 for emergency treatment. A quick Google Maps check revealed the supposed "Polish hospital" was actually in Turkey. This experience left me deeply unsettled by how scammers exploit international image. While Betty felt embarrassed initially, we now use this case to warn others during our office cybersecurity workshops. The incident made me permanently skeptical of online "perfect matches," especially those overly eager to discuss wealth and tragedy - a cautionary tale in our hyper-connected city-state.

17/18】【50:13-52:02】 So do we have any other questions about this topic? Yes, in part 1, do you often receive suspicious emails or messages? How did you deal with them? Yes, I occasionally receive suspicious emails or messages. Usually, they claim I've won a prize or ask for personal information. To deal with them, I first verify the sender's authenticity. If it seems dubious, I refrain from clicking any links or sharing details. I often report such messages as spam to my email provider. Being cautious and skeptical is crucial in protecting my personal information and avoiding potential scams. This approach helps me navigate the digital world more safely. And then in part 3, there's another question. What are the most common scams in your country? What do you think? Well, in my country, the most common scams include phishing emails, phone calls impersonating government officials, and online shopping frauds. Phishing emails often trick people into revealing personal information. Phone scammers pretend to be from tax or police departments, demanding money under false pretenses. Online shopping frauds involve fake websites or products that never arrive. To combat these, public awareness campaigns and stringent cyber laws have been implemented. Remaining vigilant and verifying information independently are essential for protection. Yeah, I can't agree more. OK, guys, so stay safe and stay wise. Yes OK, that's all for today. Thank you for listening.

1/18】【0:00-2:54】 Hey guys, it's Gossip English time. This is Yao. And I'm Wing. Let's learn English through gossip. Hey Wing, did you hear about Wang Xing, the actor from “Ip Man 3”, “The Tale of Rose”, and “Under the Skin 2”? Oh, the guy who vanished in Myanmar, and then his girlfriend tried to save him by posting everything, posted his photos and asked for help. And then a lot of celebrities and stars tried to help him. That guy? Yes, exactly. So Wang Xin got this super legit sounding WeChat message from a Thai film crew, claiming to be the GMM Grammy, a real company. They offered him a role, then he threw to Bangkok, hopped into their car. Well, the next thing he knew, he was near Mawadi, Myanmar, trapped into a human trafficking ring. Yeah, and I heard he was not the first actor who got scammed. I heard after his experience, I saw other actors posted something similar about their experiences. But they were lucky, they tried their way to escape, and they succeeded. Yeah, actually, multiple actors got the same scammy casting invite, and they all fell into the trap. So I think this is one of the tricks that how the trafficking team tried to kidnap the people to Myanmar and started the scam. So how did he escape? Well, thankfully, just now you mentioned, his girlfriend posted everything in Weibo, so that everybody knew. And then the Thai police rescued him in a few days through a border crossing. So I think thanks to that, that's why he could escape safely. Wow, that's sort of lucky. Did you see his photos before and after? Yeah, so before he was very charming. And after he was rescued, I don't know why, like, he just got a haircut, and he was in the really, really short hair, right?
