Da Shu, Major Heat, is the twelfth of the 24 solar terms and the final chapter of summer. As an old Chinese saying goes, "When Major Heat arrives, it feels like steaming above and boiling below." During this period, which usually falls around the middle of the "Dog Days," the sun is fierce. Heat and moisture mix together, turning the earth into a giant steamer. During the day, cicadas chirp so loudly that their voices almost go hoarse. In the afternoon, sudden thunderstorms roll in and out quickly. The heavy rain brings brief relief, but the scorching sun soon returns, evaporating the water and making the air even hotter and more suffocating. If Minor Heat is the slow buildup of the heatwave, Major Heat is the absolute peak of summer's power. Standing at the tail end of the season, it takes the word "hot" to its extreme.
