During ascent, one of six Raptor engines shut down early. Engineers briefly paused the orbital insertion attempt, reviewed the data, and decided to continue, lighting one Raptor engine on Starship and finally sending the vehicle into orbit for the first time. Afterward, Starship successfully deployed 26 upgraded V3 Starlink satellites, joining its in-orbit network of more than 11,000 satellites. Previous Starship launches deliberately avoided orbit to ensure safety. U.S. regulators have now approved its next step, confident it can safely accelerate to orbital velocity and return controllably. SpaceX CFO Bret Johnsen called it a "revenue-generating flight," because the V3 satellites have reached mass-production standards and will be integrated into the network.
