An important river in my country is Zhujiang, or in English, the Pearl River.

It’s an extensive river system located in south China. I think it starts from Yunnan, a Southwest province, and then passes through Guizhou, Guangxi, and then Guangdong Province, from where it feeds into the South China Sea.

I’m not sure how long it is, but I guess it’s at least 2,000 kilometers in length.

The Pearl River system is pretty vast and on its last stretch before flowing into the sea, a huge delta in Canton has developed and includes many estuaries, some of which are used for deep-water ships, and it’s been one of the country’s richest and fastest-growing zones for hundreds of years. This area is actually called the Pearl River Delta Metropolitan Region, covering Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Macao, Hong Kong, Dongguan, Foshan, and so on, which are some of the country’s most prosperous cities.

The Pear River is extremely important for quite a few factors.

First, it serves as an important drinking water resource for cities and towns along its banks. Second, being the longest river in south China, it has been an essential channel for transporting cargo and passengers for thousands of years, and besides that, it was part of the maritime Silk Road route. And lastly, as I mentioned just now, the Pearl River Delta Metropolitan Region, which sits along the last stretch of the Pearl River before it feeds into the South China Sea, is an international economic hub. A great amount of goods are manufactured and exported from here and in recent years, this region has evolved into a high-tech zone specializing in robots, artificial intelligence, and so on.

So that’s an important river in my country – Zhujiang, or the Pearl River.
