Reynolds said the song is about how the obstacles in his life such as being “kicked” out of college pushed him to achieve success in music. Those obstacles created a great deal of anger in him that eventually gave birth to his “art”.

At the age of 13, while other classmates were playing sports or out partying, he was at home in his bedroom, writing his treatises (/'tri:tiziz/ 论文) and recording music.

"I'd just sit down with a mic and record something, whether it was about dealing with some heartbreak from some girl or being too skinny because I couldn't gain weight. Just stupid stuff. And that's the only way I know how to communicate — just through music — I felt like I could say things that I can't relay  (/'riːleɪ/ 传达) any other way."
