Actually the song charted the Billboard Hot 100 many times, and sometimes top 10. Finally, 25 years after It was first heard, it hit #1 this year. 

By the end of the year, Carey’s Merry Christmas album sold 3 million copies, and another million by the end of 1996. The song also topped the chart in Japan, where it sold over a million units.

About a decade later in 2003, the song seemed to get a bigger boost. It was sang by a young actress in the hit movie, Love Actually. 

In 2015, a children's picture book inspired by and featuring all the lyrics of this song was published. The book recounts the story of a little girl whose greatest Christmas wish is for a new puppy.

In 2017, an animated film based on the song was also released.
