Why 'dopamine websites' are taking off around the world
Host: Now, many of us have probably made a few impulse buys on the internet over the years and immediately regretted it. So how about getting the excitement of buying something without spending any money? You can, it seems, thanks to so-called dopamine websites.
They took off in South Korea some time ago, but now they can be accessed around the world. So what are these popular fake experience websites and how do they work? Celia Hatton asked our reporter, Ira Khan.
Ira: These sites mimic the ritual of buying something without you actually paying for it. There's fake delivery sites, fake shopping sites. You can even get a fake holiday.
For example, one of the sites is called Food Never Comes in India. What you do, you open the site. There's a real-life menu with actual prices. You even get a call from the delivery driver telling you when he's outside. And it's actually an AI generated delivery driver.
The creators of this site say it's attracted almost 3 million visitors since June. It's trying to basically mimic the ritual that we enjoy from shopping, the satisfaction and the rush we get off to replace an order without us actually having to pay for it. How many times have you ordered something at night when you get the sort of delivery notification? You're like, did I really even want that?
Celia: That's very true. So Ira, we've just gone through the process here. It took just a couple of seconds. Do these websites really work on a bigger scale?
Ira: What these websites are basically suggesting is when we want to go on a holiday or we want to order food, we're not actually craving the thing itself. We're mostly craving the rush that comes with it. You want to still experience that dopamine hit, which has become sort of a constant now in life without the downside, which is actually paying a lot of money.
Although we aren't spending money right now buying these products, the websites themselves, they're making money through the ads that they put on their websites. they're also sharing data about consumer spending and what products are doing well with people.
