Frank Tsai is the largest single organizer of public lectures and talks in Shanghai.  He is the founder and CEO of China Crossroads, hosting the largest number of public talks on "China and the world" where he invites senior figures in academia, politics, business and foreign affairs.  He is an American formerly working at Control Risks, the top global risk consultancy and at The Economist Intelligence Unit.  He also has a background teaching geopolitical risk analysis and international media.  Today we talk about China and America, we talk about the ideological mindsets behind the tensions and our experience living as Chinese-Americans.

49:37 As a mix (Chinese/Korean), I experience a different kind of anxiety living in China. I often feel that people around me judge me when I am with a non-Chinese person, esp. a non-Chinese man in public. So I don't stand or sit too close to them or hug them in public. But this (me keeping my distance whenever I'm with them in public) also really bugs some of my non-Chinese friends... I know it's my own insecurities and I shouldn't care so much what other people think but it's like an automatic reaction in me that I just can't turn off easily because I feel that many people do (judge). For example, a white guy friend and I had a strange experience at a Starbucks in Beijing last year where this Chinese guy was so annoyed by the sight of me sitting with and talking to my friend that he walked up to us and said we were being freaking annoying...
