Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic smaller than a grain of rice. We can find microplastics everywhere, like in the ocean, rivers and even in the air we breathe in. They come from broken-down plastic products and tiny bits in things like body wash and toothpaste.
Microplastics can even take hundreds of years to break down. As a result, they pose a significant threat to our natural ecosystems. Meanwhile, microplastics are dangerous because they can absorb harmful chemicals from their surroundings. Wildlife can eat them by accident, and it can hurt or even kill them. Microplastics can also get into our food, which could potentially cause health problems. Researchers are still studying the long-term effects of being exposed to microplastics, but it's clear they could be really harmful to the environment and our health.
