【转录1/10】 Hi guys, it's Gossip English time! Let's learn English through gossip! Hello everyone! Hi! Yao, do you have any pets? Wing, you don't know what my nickname is? What's your nickname? Cat Addict, aka 猫奴 Okay, how many cats do you have? Guess? 3, 4, 6? Yeah, I have 4 cats at home! That's a lot! What's their temperament? Are they troublemakers? Are they naughty? Or are they good? So they all have different temperaments. One is the American Shorthair. He is very active. And he is very good at social with strangers. That sounds like a troublemaker. Yeah! And he is also very affectionate with me. And happily follow me from room to room. Sounds like a dog. Yeah! I always think that he has a dog's soul, but it's put in a cat's body. Interesting. What about the others? I also have 2 British Shorthairs. They are very easy-going. And very sweet-natured. And also they are very devotedto me. I also have one black and white cat. He is actually a typical Chinese local cat. But he is totallydifferent from the others. Very timid. And aggressive. And he likes to stay close to me, but not too close. So Wing, how about you? Oh, I actually have a dog. Very cute little dog. I always say she is a little puppy. But to avoid any misunderstanding, she is actually a medium-large breed called German Shorthaired Pointer. And now she is already 10 months old. So she is not that little puppy per se. Wel, so is she well-behaved? Well, although she is in her first heat Bleeding like a human being's period. Which means she is pretty much getting into her adulthood. She is still very much puppying all the time. By the way, puppying is not a real verb. It's just my way to describe how she behaves. You know, like little dog with big round eyes looking at you all the time. And they are too cute that you can't really scold them when they do something naughty.

【转录2/10】 And so sweet that you want to cuddle them all the time. Yeah, that's how I say that behavior, puppying. Well, I can totally relate to you, you know. When they look at you with their puppy eyes, you cannot do anything even though they make a huge mess at home, right? Yep, I luckily still have a few nice pieces of furniture left. Oh my gosh. So you sound like you love her so much. Yeah, she's great. She brings me enormous joy and comfort like the sun in my life's ups and downs. What do you think about your cats? Like, do they bring you anything special? Any specific feelings? You know, every day when I go home, my cats will come to the door and welcome me home. It gave me the sense of belonging. It gives me a lot of joy, you know. And sometimes when I feel so scared at night, I cannot sleep alone, my cats will just sleep beside me. So I won't be so scared of the darkness or whatever. So I really love them. I always think cats and dogs are both domestic pets already after so many years of domestication. But I still think cats and dogs are so different. Like cats are more arrogant and dogs are more humble. Yeah, exactly, right? I don't know. I never have cats. So I don't know. Do you ever have any dogs before? Yeah, I used to have a dog. Tibetan mastiff. Wow, that's a very extreme dog. Yeah, everybody thinks like that. However, you don't know. Actually, he's just like a baby boy. Even though he has a huge size of body, however, deep inside, he's just a little boy. He would just jump on you, just give you a big hug. So like a big guy? No, like a baby boy soul living in a masculine guy. Exactly. That's funny. So I think people have pets for all kinds of reasons. Probably goes with your life experience and your own personality and needs, etc. What's the weirdest pets have you ever heard? I think the weirdest pets maybe are snakes. I can't really imagine why people like having the snakes as pets. They seem so... Cold? Yeah, I think so. They are not clingy?

【转录3/10】 Yeah, so I cannot really imagine that. I know some of my friends have pet snakes. For me, it's a little bit strange. Well, since I was a little, my family have pet tortoises. Tortoises are still reasonable because my sister used to keep a tortoise as a pet. When I saw the tortoise, I asked her, are you going to use it for the soup or something? Very Cantonese. Well, that was actually my first pet tortoise. They are cold. They're not very cute per se, you know? Like hard shells, always hiding their head and feet. Not until I had a dog recently, I found having pets should be furry and you can talk to them. Probably they re a little bit clingy, but that's the fun part. Having a tortoise, basically it's like you and that tortoise will never know each other forever. That's the feeling because my tortoise doesn't really talk to me or act like talking to me. I know, you cannot feel the connection between you guys, right? Exactly. So, tortoises and snakes actually are categorized as exotic pets. Exotic pets. Okay. So, they could be reptiles, like snakes and lizards. Amphibians, like frogs and toads. Actually, my cousins have some toads at home. Wow. Yellow color. Very strange. Very, very strange. Oh. The third kind isexotic birds, like cockatoos and toucans. Small mammals, like ferrets and sugar gliders. Arachnids and insects, like scorpions and certain species of mantises. etc. oh mygosh. 你知道 very interesting facts?

This is a really interesting fact, huh? Yeah. Anyway, why do we talk about so many pets here? Because I've read a piece of very viral news. What is it? A father bought his son, 8-year-old son, an octopus. An octopus? Yes. As a pet? Yes, 章鱼 Oh, wow. Because the son had been begging for a pet octopus for a year, and now they named the octopus Terrence. Oh my gosh, you know, as a Cantonese... Very delicious. Talking about the octopus, I was just thinking how to cook it. Deep-fried or fried? You reminded me of one time I went diving. Actually, that was my first time to dive. I remember when we went down to the ocean, and I saw an octopus. Okay. My trainer is also Chinese, but Malaysian Chinese, so I did a gesture like Chinese using chopstick. My two fingers like chopstick, and the other hand like a bowl. So I made the hand gesture to my trainer. First, I pointed at the octopus, and then I made the gesture to my trainer and showed him it was delicious. And then after we surfaced, the trainer almost wanted to kill me. Why? Because all divers should be ocean animal lovers, I think. Sort of. We need to protect the animals, I guess. You know what? If I were you, I would do the exact same thing. Because just looking at a big octopus, who doesn't want to have a feast? Well, that's not why it becomes news. After all, the news is not from Canton area, so that's not about big octopus become a feast. Okay. Why I mention about this news? Because the next day, they brought the octopus home. The new tank was filled with dozens of eggs. Dozens of eggs? Yes. So the octopus laid the eggs? Yes. Oh, wow. Well, the first reaction of the family was, well, Terence was not a male octopus, because they thought that was a male octopus. That was their first thoughts.

【转录5/10】 But that was the only first twist in saga. So what is it? The biggest surprise actually came a few days later, when the father picked up one of the eggs, which he had long assumed weren't fertilized. And accidentally, he popped it. Wow. What he thought at that time was a blob of some strange liquid,就是一滩奇怪的水,came out and fell back into the tank. Seconds later, the blob started swimming. That was a tiny version of Terence. Let me show you the picture. Wow, it's so tiny. Just like a red bean. But I can see it's eight-legs clearly. So the whole body is the same size as the fingernail. Of a little boy. Yeah, of a little boy. Yeah. And it moves flexibly. Wow, that's amazing. Yeah. Can you picture 50 of them? I can not. So that just started the whole stress of it. Because now the family felt the immense responsibility of taking care of these babies. All those eggs became tiny octopus. In total, at first, it was 50 of them. Wow. Yeah. So this type of octopus is called California Two-Spot Octopuses, also known as Bimacs. So having an octopus is really hard, the father said. It's laborsome and expensive. It's wet, it's all over the places. The father warned, you shouldn't do it if you are not prepared to follow through. Well, I think he is right. No matter what kind of animals, what kind of pets we have, we have to shoulder our responsibility and take good care of them.

【转录6/10】 Because we have so many things in our world, but they only have us in their world. Yeah, we are all they have in their life. Well, the family is kind of lucky and unlucky at the same time. I feel bad for them in some way because of 50 octopus babies. The prospect of caring for 51 octopuses was daunting. The babies have to be fed a daily serving of live shrimp. They have to be hand-fed one by one. So tiring. Yep. And each octopus, each baby octopus, has to be kept in its own plastic containers. It seems that they are so fragile. Not just because of that, it's also because they would fight and eat each other if they are not kept separately. Ah, I see. Especially when they are hungry, just like us. If you are hungry, we will eat anything. Yeah, just like the hamsters, right? If they are too hungry, they will eat the other hamsters or something like that. Really? Yeah. That's awful. For mammals, I feel extremely awful. I think so. But this is the rule of survival. I guess nature. Yeah, so I think the family just spent so much time and effort taking good care of their octopus. Yeah, they are now on a mission to find good homes for all those octopuses. That's good. Yeah. And the interesting part of the whole story and also the very touching part of the story for me is the whole family wound up owning about 90% of all octopuses in Oklahoma exactly because of this journey. It starts their son's love of marine biology, especially octopuses. So after they have 50 babies and the little boy who asked for pet octopus, now he has learned how to tender 50 baby octopus. And now he's really into it.

【转录7/10】 I think this is a really good lesson for the whole family, especially for the kids. Learning how to love the animals, learning how to appreciate our nature. Yeah. Well, let's see how the people react to the 90% of all octopuses in Oklahoma. Okay, so this is the most interesting part, I think. Okay, so Vonnie said, Is the ocean closed? Is the ocean closed? Yeah. And Cheryl Ranee said, Why would anyone think that an octopus wants to live with them and not in the ocean? Anything else? One more. Mama's nail. Mama's nail. Yeah. Fun fact. Octopuses and octopi are both generally accepted as the plural form of octopus. But the word is Greek, so the plural form is octopodes. Octopodes. Yes. Just some fun facts. Actually, you can say octopuses or octopi or octopodes. Good to know. Yeah, just some fun facts. So, Wing, just now we talked about so many funny things. Let's talk about something serious. So, any speaking tips that we can use in our speaking test? As a matter of fact, in TELTS Part 2, there is a topic about animals. The topic is, Describe your favorite animal. You should say what it is, where it lives, and what it eats, and explain why you like it. So, let's use the phrases we just mentioned today in our topic. So, can you give us an example? Sure. In the depths of the ocean lives my favorite animal, the octopus, because of its unique and intelligent temperament. Often considered as exotic pets.

Octopuses come with a unique set of challenges, but those who care for them feel immense responsibility. (Feel immense responsibility. Yeah, we just gave some examples of the phrases we've just learned. I hope you can use all of them in our exams, and you can score higher. So, any other questions that we can use to describe the pets? In IELTS Part 1 or Part 3, there are a few questions about pets. For example, do people in your country typically keep pets in their homes? How would you answer? Well, actually in my country, some people keep cats and dogs as pets at home. Some people even keep the exotic pets, like snakes. However, also some people don't keep pets because they feel immense responsibility to take good care of them. So, another question might come up in IELTS Part 1 and 3 would be, did you have a pet when you were a child? For me, this question, just like as I mentioned before, I had a tortoise, which is also an exotic pet. Their temperament is just like a stranger who doesn't like to talk to you. So they have a really unique temperament. Okay, so any other questions? Sure, is there any kind of pets that you would like to have?

【转录9/10】 In the future, I really want to have an exotic pet, like octopus, because I really want to see if they can lay 50 eggs. If they can, then I think it's a really good bargain. Buy one, get 50! That's immense responsibility of 50 octopuses, baby octopuses. Yeah. Well, Wing, I think maybe you can help me take care of 25 octopuses? Well, let's talk about it then. Well, it's time for today. Thank you for listening, I hope you can learn a lot.
