Why do some people prefer to study alone?
I guess it’s because studying by themselves makes them more efficient. Compared to studying in groups, when you are alone, it’s easier for you to concentrate and you can spend more time digesting and reflecting on what you are learning and have learned.
While working in groups is helpful when working on a group project, actual learning through study is an individual task, so unless you need someone to explain the material, I can’t see how else one can study. It’s an individual effort, so I guess that would be the reason.
- reflect on 反思
- an individual task 个人任务
Besides parents, who else would people take advice from?
People seek and take advice from their family members, close friends, teachers, and workmates besides parents, which usually covers options on, for instance, university major and career, and for some, their choice of mate, and I suppose for others, even what clothes they wear, but overall, I think most people gather advice from those closest to them, which may or may not be their parents, but I’d say most likely it’s their best friends and siblings.
Do young people take their parents’ advice on choosing a major?
I think a majority of students do, at least here. Here, most people enter a university when they’re 18 or 19 and a lot of them are not sure about the field they’re going to select, and as a result, they follow the advice from their parents who, I have to say, mostly give advice based on the social status of the intended occupation, the prospective income it might generate, and the practicality of the field and job upon graduation, but I would say it is only a minority of teenagers who end up following their own interest.
- only a minority 只有一小部分
- end up 最终
Which makes young people choose a major, income or interest?
I would say 75 to 95% choose their major based on income, but to be honest, I simply don’t know, but my feeling is that the vast majority base their chosen major on the perceived income the profession can generate.
- the vast majority 绝大多数
