Hello everyone and welcome to episode 25 of Weekend English Club.

Today I finally did something which I wanted to do for a very long time: I adopted a cat. I used to have a cat many years ago and I always wanted to get one again but I did not have the chance until now. I wanted to adopt one who still needed an owner, so I went to an animal shelter to find one. The cat I adopted is a very cute 6 year old girl and she was taken to the animal shelter because her previous owner could not take care of her anymore. Now she is in my home, but she still needs time to get used to her new house.

Cats are very different from dogs in many ways. Dogs are very social and always need attention and training, but cats don't mind being alone most of the time. Wild cats are very good hunters, and they will always hunt alone. You can see your housecat do this too when they go after birds or mice, and they are really good at it. Cats can jump very high, run very fast, have sharp claws and can see very well in the dark. For us they are very cute, but I can imagine they must seem very scary if you are a little mouse.

My new cat is still very shy and is hiding in my closet, and when they do this it is important to give them time to come out when they feel ready. Moving to a new home is very stressful for a cat and they need to get used to you. Smells are very important for them and in a new house everything smells strange and new, so they need to get used to that. They like rubbing their face against objects in the house to make them smell more like them and make it feel more like their own house, so it's good when they start doing that. If your cat spends a lot of time hiding you don't need to feel worried, just be patient. It can take a few days before they really want to start going out and walking around the house, so it can be nice for them to leave some food and water near their hiding place. Otherwise they might feel too scared to go looking for it somewhere far away. If your cat finally comes out of their hiding place, don't scare them by running to them or trying to pick them up because then they might run back to go hide again. Just give them time to get used to you.

I really like cats and I think having one in your house is very good for your health. They make me feel more relaxed and I love having a cat sit with me when I watch a movie. I think that is why they are such popular pets, and I hope my new cat will soon enjoy living with me.
